    Default Duracoat Good-OK- Bad ???

    http://www.duracoat-firearm-finishes.com/

I have a 1911 I would like to refinish myself and have been reading about the Duracoat. I want to do it so I don't have to send it off for God only know's how long. Does anyone have hand's on knowledge as to it's quality, finish, durability etc. Opinion's welcomed please

i did a few guns with the spray on type.. make sure u got a wide enough airbrush tip or it clogs. also clean it real good and sand with a scotch pad then blow dust off. it holds up well if done right. if u bang it hard it may chip but so far all mine held up well.

Duracoat is good, but one tip... ....you cannot get the gun clean enough. The cleaner you get it, the better the results. Strip it completely of oils, grease, dust, fingerprints, whatever - and you should be happy with the outcome.

I guess using this paint prep would be effective? Thank's again I'm sold, going to order it today.
Should I completely remove the old finish or just sand it really well?

I had mine professionally done by a local smith. I love it and after 2 years it still looks great. This is strictly a range bench gun so that might also help. If you have the confidence that you can do it yourself I say go for it.

The pic's of your rifle look very good. I don't think I would tackle a rifle but I believe I can handle a pistol. I'll post some before & after pics.

Good post. I think I am going to order a can of Durabake for my Taurus 1911. I dont have a sprayer so this may be for me. I always hated the way it has the word Taurus blaster all over it. I was going to send it off to robar anyway so I really have nothing to lose.

Use Brake Kleen to clean the gun. It about $6 a can, use it all. It will strip every last spec of oil and dirt off the gun and air dries.

doesn't lighter fluid work pretty good to accomplish this? it's cheap too..like $2 at walmart. I use ronsonol to gum up the old lube on my guns then I clean it and reapply weapon shield.
