Angry Rant - Mt Nittany Trashed.

So this morning I decided to get a little exercise and loaded some weight in a pack and headed up Mt. Nittany. I've got a shooting comp coming up in May that involves climbing hills and shooting out to 1125yds. I figured I'd be good practice to load out and take a hike up the hill. When I got to the parking spot it was almost full.

On the way up I found a wal mart bag laying on the trail. I picked it up. A little further up I found a some empty "capri sun", more trash, random paper. I picked that up.

At the top I found the source of the litter. Gaggle of college age males heading down the hill. From the looks of them they didn't appear to be very adept in the woods and looked like they were dressed more for cruising the streets in souped up Civics than camping.

At the top I found two smoldering fires, a bunch of trash, empty food cans, toilet paper, water bottles, broken folding chair, water jug, and more random shit.

I know it was them because on my way back down the hill I found even more trash and then at the base a heap of plastic bags stuffed full of trash. Maybe I'm being a little harsh. After all, they seem to have tried to pick something up. But then I realize they just dumped it all at the bottom of the mountain, left half of it strewn on top of the mountain.

Unfortunately all the cars were gone, otherwise I'd probably have pulled plate numbers.

So to the little shits that wrecked the Mtn., I understand mommy and daddy aren't there to pick up after you, so just stay the fuck off Mt. Nittany.

    Rant Over.

Yeah, that's ridiculous. One of the reasons when we'd go out hiking as kids we'd all stuff our pockets with plastic bags. Still do it to this day. People can be pigs.

Don't temp me. All they'd find left is the fluff from their poofy jackets, maybe a gold chain or two.

They were heading down the hill when I got to the top, I ran the upper loop and by the time I got to their trash pile on top, they were probably already loaded up and gone. Had I known I'd have found what I did on top, I'd have ran back down the hill to get the plates.

Thing is, I know a lot of people venture up there. Locals, college kids, out of towners, etc. Maybe I find the occassional lost water bottle or something. This is the first time I've seen such a blatent disregard. Last thing I picked up was a half full roll of toilet paper they left soaking in a seep near the base.

I think next time I'll just put a bag in my pocket and haul stuff down next time I'm up there.

Unfortunately this doesn't surprise me one bit anymore. The student and even some of the ignorant locals trash EVERYWHERE they go, thankfully there are people like you out there who are willing to take the extra effort to help keep the place clean. Thank you.

One trick I've used is to take a quick digital photo of parking lots with lp numbers. Especially at the range when there are a bunch of "problem children" student there and the gate is closed. Very non-chelant, if there are no problems then I just delete it but if there are then I already have the info I need. I find myself doing this more and more and it's frustrating.

If you're up for a fun time on a saturday night when the weather is good, head up the mtn and stay just far enough away that they can't see you but can hear you. Proceed to tromp around enough to get their attention, then stop. let them think everything is ok and go at it again. Rinse repeat. Makes for a fun evening!

As you are entitled, still won't stop me. I don't walk up to each tag and snap a pic but a wide angle of the parking lot is enough and can be done when walking toward the range. I've also used this technique to help me find where I've parked my car on vacation or in large unfamiliar parking lots while traveling. We've been having a lot of problems at out SGL's locally and being able to provide this information can only help the game commission. No one has ever noticed and if they did they haven't said anything.
