I'm not in the market for one right now but it will be my next gun. Any suggestions?

Re: Best affordable long range rifle
Mosin Nagant.
hehehe.
thefirstndsecond is right though, for what range are you talking about and what size target?
An 1891/30 can hit a man sized target at half a mile ... depending on the quality of that particular rifle. Hitting a bullseye at that distance though? Probably not.
One rifle that mostly likely CAN however is a K31. You might find one in the $300 range. Fires 7.5mm Swiss. Those suckers have LEGENDARY accuracy. It's common to see them in use in 1000 yard competitions. With iron sights. Unmodified, those rifles are capable of 1MOA. They were made with extremely tight tolerances. Stock condition is usually crap, but they are world renown shooters for sure.Last edited by Nullifidian; April 13th, 2010 at 11:48 AM.

Formerly I would have said a Swedish Mauser M-96 in 6.5x55.
Get a Savage basic bolt in a caliber of your choice.

Re: Best affordable long range rifle
Buy a Remington 700 SPS in .308 parkerized finish, Scope it with a Leupold Vari XII 3-9, 40 MM objective, buy a Harris bipod and thank me later
Why? Surplus ammo is cheap, theyre good rifles for the money, the finish is tough as nails and you won't be afraid to actually shoot it or hunt with it in the rain, the glass is a good price for the quality of the optics, the bipod is a cheap add on but results in better accuracy from both prone and bench. Youll get a good rifle rig thats a proven performer out past 400yds with practice for under a thousand. You want more range/power? then up the caliber to .300 win mag but the ammunition is expensiveDerrion Albert was my Hero.

Ditto bigandy1966!
Ya may also want to take a peek at Savage Arms' offerings too!
http://www.savagearms.com/
I would suggest .308 or .30-06.
(Lots of Match, Factory, and Surplus ammo available out here in the interwebs.)

Re: Best affordable long range rifle
You need better ammo
According to the Marine Corps, the Barrett "M82A1A...fires the .50-caliber RAUFOSS ammunition, which contains a tungsten penetrator and a more powerful explosive charge than the API ammunition....it has penetrated an inch of steel at 2000 yards." Jane's International Defense Review estimates that the round is "probably capable of disabling a man wearing body armor who is standing behind the wall of a house at 2,000m.
