What year is my S&W 29-2 from?
I just picked it up today (it was my first time at Tanners - Impressive store!) and I spotted it. I have been lusting for a Model 29 for a while now and couldn't help myself (it doesn't help that I watched a couple of Dirty Harry movies very recently).
Anyway, the serial is N364730. I'd like to know what year it is from and any other pertinent information.
Thanks!

i also am a keeper of the book
1975/76.
it's blued, has an 8 and 3/8" inch barrel and shoots the 44 magnum.
so much for captain canseethepicture.
looks like it has the three "T"s:
target trigger
target hammer
and target sights.
did it come with any of the other gingerbread?
like the cleaning kit, tools and paper work?
looks like a decent score regardless.

Re: What year is my S&W 29-2 from?
Thank you for the information!
I knew it had the target trigger as it has that nice wide feel and look. As for the hammer and sights, that is news to me. The hammer feels really good when you cock it and the sights are nice and bright with that white outline on the rear sight.
It came with a wooden case (actual smith and wesson) as well as this crappy aluminum (I think?) cleaning rod, but no brushes or anything.
I thought it was an 8 1/2" barrel but 8 3/8" is essentially the same.
I'm so excited about this gun! Now my '88 686 has a friend!

Re: What year is my S&W 29-2 from?
Not that it matters - especially since you bought it as a shooter - but I don't think the presentation case is contemporary with the gun. While it would be rare to find a 29 of that era without a presentation case, I believe that yours came from a later date than the gun. I bought my 29-2 new and it has a later serial number than yours. The presentation case that came with mine (and other N-frames I purchased in that timeframe) had individual receses for the cleaning tools and screwdriver. I believe that the ones with the covered compartment, like yours, came later. Relying on memory here - and that is a depreciating asset, so I could be mistaken. Nice find BTW. Enjoy it.
