S&W 629 .44MAG Just Plain nuts?

My father in law has a 1.5inch 629 that is magna ported, the trigger has a 4.5oz pull in single action. He bought from a FBI agent in western PA. My father in law used it as his back up gun when he was a Constable. Man does it kick!!!!!

ive shot a coworkers revolver, im guessing about the same size as the one here, but it was a .460

now that was fun!

This gun is a classic. I love everything about it. The longer barreled variety in chrome with walnut grips....does it get any sexier?

I'd love to have a 2" or 3" .44 mag (but my check book just doesn't agree!)

Mine's not a Performance Center model, but I have a 629 Classic with the 5-inch barrel. It is great fun to shoot. Even with the 5-inch barrel I get some impressive muzzle blast, so I imagine that with a 3" barrel it will double as a flamethrower. The ported barrel on that Performance Center model likely will help with muzzle flip, but it will still kick hard -- but then, the .44 mag is supposed to kick hard. You may also get some debris -- I have a .357 with a 2-inch ported barrel and my hands and arms get dirty fast from stuff flying out of the ports. There was another thread a few months back about ported barrels and I remember another shooter saying he got hit in the face by debris from his .357 ported snubby. The designs of the port and ammo choices also are likely factors in debris from a ported barrel.

Back to the .44 mag -- I mainly have shot 240 gr. flat nosed FMJ Magtech factory rounds in mine and they've worked well for me with very good accuracy and reasonable (but still considerable) recoil. If you use heavier or hotter rounds be ready for more recoil. My 629's got the Hogue rubber grips on it, which are not nearly as pretty as the wood grips but are comfortable for shooting.

I've been keeping my eye out for a good deal on a 629 with a 4 inch barrel. This thread just reinforces my want need for one of these sweet guns!
