Ruger Mark III takedown questions
So...we went to look at a Browning Buckmark 22LR after all the comments on cleaning a Ruger. Darn, i held a Ruger Mark III Hunter with fluted barrel! I think i am hooked.
My questions: How is the trigger pull? I have a Smith revolver #63 and the double action is tough for me with chronic tendonitus so i shoot it mostly single. Would this Ruger be easier to shoot? or are modifications necessary?
2nd question: Cleaning - i see you need to pull the trigger upon takedown and reassembly for the firing pin .....so doesn't this in time damage the barrel or firing pin (not mechanically knowlegeable on this) but i know one should never dry fire a rimfire gun. Whats up with that? Should you put a spent shell in there before doing this? or will the shell be in the way somehow?
This seems like a bad idea and since we clean our guns after every shoot, this is bothering me.
Thanks for any info.

Re: Ruger Mark III takedown questions
Follow the directions in the manual. You're not going to hurt it with one dry fire before each cleaning.
Here's a website with detailed instructions and pictures. This guy knows his Ruger 22's inside and out.

EDIT:: I don't know about your trigger pull but my MKIII 22/45 was about 4.5 pounds before I had a VQ hammer and sear put in it. Now it's a shade above 2 pounds. It's sweet.Μολὼν λάβε

Re: Ruger Mark III takedown questions
The Ruger website has excellent videos on how to disassemble, clean, and reassemble a lot of its products. Check it out at:

It's been a big help to me.

Re: Ruger Mark III takedown questions
Get the MKIII, once you take it down a few times you'll figure out how it all works. They are very tight for the first few times, but they loosen up.

Re: Ruger Mark III takedown questions
i would try tracking down a mkI or II. they are not near as complex in the re-assembly area.
the IIIs have a bunch of flipping around and trigger pulling/holding during re-assembly.
it's not difficult or hard, but the first time or two can be a real chore.it's only metal, we can out think it....

Re: Ruger Mark III takedown questions
The MK III has a magazine disconnect. You only need insert the mag when pulling the trigger and moving the hammer is required. For what it is worth, I put at least 1,000 rounds through mine every six months. It gets cleaned every six months. It is not that difficult, but is not required after every range trip. More people foul up their .22 barrels with piss poor cleaning than if they would leave them dirty for a bit.
