    Default 1911 accessory rail?

I'm new to 1911's, I just bought my first one three days ago. A Rock Island Armory 1911 A1 Tactical. I brought it to the range today and I FUCKING LOVE IT! I put 150 rounds through it and loved every one of them. I have always wanted a 1911, so I was super happy when my finally let me buy one.

Anyways, I noticed today that I've been seeing pictures of 1911's with accessory rails. I couldn't tell if they were part of the frame, or aftermarket parts. Can I just buy and install an accessory rail on my 1911? I would love one so I can attach a light to it. This 1911 will be used for home defense, so a light would be a pretty important addition.

Most are built into the frame. I think surefire makes one that attaches to the trigger guard but, knowing surefire it's going to be expensive.

You can also buy a handheld light, unless you only have one hand.

Edit: A quick google search came up with this:

    http://www.surefire.com/MR07-Mounting-Rail

Told you it would be expensive. And it is made specifically for the X300/X400, which is also expensive but it's the only light I'd ever put on a handgun. There are probably other cheaper mounts out there.

Holy shit, my wife would shoot me if I paid $160 for that!

Fingers, I can't seem to find anything on that site... Perhaps they don't sell them online?

I'll keep digging and see if there's anything on the market for a reasonable price. For now, I'll keep a flashlight next to it.

I never wanted a light on a gun that I would pull up in front of me. What a target in the dark. I would prefer the light in my free hand held out as far from me as possible. Old school. Guess I'm showing my age.

Read the review of the product here:

Not too pricey and it seems to be a quick, easy installation. I'm considering one myself.

You know, I've thought about the tactical advantages and disadvantages to each one, and I formed my opinion based on this: Yes, bringing up a light gives away your exact location; however, you have to remember a few things. It's dark. The person in your home has had time for his eyes to adjust to the low light. Have you ever woken up in the dark and turned on the lights? For a few seconds, it's actually painful to open your eyes. So as long as you have a bright flashlight, chances are good that the assailant will be covering his eyes and backing away. Then, he will be blinded for a good 5-10 seconds because of retina burn... Or whatever they call those bright blobs that you see after seeing a bright light.

I think it depends on the situation. In a situation with low, but decent light, the assailant won't be as sensitive to the light. In this case, the light would give you away.

    Just my opinion.

EDIT: I just KNOW someone is going to chime in here and say, "real 1911's don't have accessory rails"

By way of a secret ballot and vote,i have been elected to tell you "real 1911's don't have accessory rails"..

Now for home defence, get yourself a shot gun and clamp a light to it,mant large bb,s will do more
damage to a bad guy that a 45 will.

    Juat a thought.

    Ask and ye shall receive...

    www.tinyurl.com/dawsonrail
    www.tinyurl.com/novakrail

Both of these require drilling holes in the dustcover on your 1911.
Also, keep in mind that you'll be limiting your holster selection as well.

    Glad you're enjoying your 1911.

Right now, drilling holes in my gun is going just a tad too far. I know, I know, beggars can't be choosers, but I'm not willing to do it.
