Default A day of OC encounters

So I headed over to my girlfriends yesterday to pick her up. We had plans to go out for the day, do some shopping, grab some lunch, and then later dinner.

I pull in and her father is out on the porch, beside him was some man I've never seen before. I walk up, greet them, and her dad walks inside. This guy that was there turned out to be a handyman of some sort. One of the pipes in the basement broke and destroyed some of the wall so he was replacing it.

Him: Hey(makes wide eyed face and steps back and then leans in for a better look), what you got there?
    Me: a gun
Him: Oh, you have your holders permit?
Me: I have a license to carry firearms
    Him: What do you do?
    Me: I'm a chef
Him: Umm, what do you need a gun for? You're a pretty big guy, you don't need no gun.
    Me: self-defense
Him: What are you scared of me or something?
Me: No, (I motioned to my girlfriend and daughter) I'm scared of crack heads and people with bad intentions. Alot of shit happens on these mountains.
Him: Yeah I hear ya man, it's not like it used to be around here.
-----and then he walked off to do some more work.

I walk inside and my girlfriends younger brother and his friend were inside.
Bro: Hey man, you should conceal that. Someone is gunna come up and take it from you.
    Me: No they won't.
Bro: Well what if they just want to take it, they will walk up and pop you.
Me: I don't think that's likely to happen. In fact, there have been no documented cases, out of 10's of thousands of open carriers across the country.
Me: Most criminals want to get their goods and leave, only a small minority will out right kill someone in public to get what they want. And chances are, they will decide not to go after the guy with a gun in plain sight.
Him: I guess so man, I still say if they want it they are gunna take it.
Me: There are alot of ways for people to obtain guns illegally, killing someone in public who is a complete stranger and totally unrelated to any illegal activity is probably the most risky, and worst way for a criminal to get a gun.. I just can't see it happening.
Me: If someone tries to take my gun, I will kill them. If someone attempts to take your gun away, you can only assume they are doing so to kill you with it. It is an act of lethal aggression and warrants an equal response.
Me: I then explained the virginia OC'ers events last year at the golden gas station.
Him: Alright man... we're gunna go watch some movies bro(leaves)

2 more encounters yesterday but I don't have time to finish writing them up. Must head out, I'll update thread later

Ya might want to rethink that one.
    Wasn`t this guy disarmed?

Seems to me that a SINGLE incident, under highly dubious circumstances and clear inappropriate showing off of the weapon hardly equates to an event being likely to occur, which is what jcabin wrote. Just sayin...........

Good one, almost. That's still a disarm, but not quite an act of aggression as was the context of the discussion between my gfs brother and I. From what I understand of that thread, the guy intentionally displayed his weapon, from concealment(in a bar, for attention), he wasn't open carrying.

I'd like this thread not to turn into a debate, about another thread. Go discuss it there.

in over two years, i know of only two cases of open carriers having their guns grabbed; one is a member here, and the other was a man in VA, who was targeted by thieves who wanted his gun. again, only two. so, it can happen, but it's a rarity. i'd like to think that most people who choose to carry are a little more aware of their surroundings, and have trained to react quickly.

Family encounters are always interesting. I'm going to my grandparent's today to set them up with internet and a computer, and I'll be OCing on the way there. Out of respect for them, I'll cover up with my T-Shirt, but I'm pretty sure it'll ride up and some point and I'll unknowingly switch to OC while I'm there.

Good job on handling the conversations well.

Wasn't the man in VA a security guard in uniform?

no, it was some guy walking his dog or something in his neighborhood. like LEO, i don't count armed security; they're armed, but in uniform, as part of their job. a person out of uniform would be targeted for different reasons than a person in uniform. usually, it's the uniform itself that's a target, as in the four officers who were killed in a WA diner.

Agreed, that's why I was inquiring.

The guy in Virginia got ambushed from behind with a two-by-four to the head.

    Still, just two known cases.
