Probably a dumb question....I've owned this SW 3913 for about 15 yrs...and never noticed it before. But what is this?

I don't know anything about that gun, but it looks like it might be a pin to hold in the external extractor. Just a thought due to its location.

Yep its the pin that retains extracter in place. Don't remove it unless you have to.

As the others have posted, it is the extractor hinge/retaining pin. What Mity cautions about is that there is a short but fairly strong little spring under the rear end of the extractor (under the portion to the left of the pin as looking at the photo). Sometimes these will self-launch upon removal of the retaining pin.

    HTH,

Correct! And let me rephrase your word "fairly strong"...
It shot out across my room, i heard it hit the window, then I heard it hit the other wall before I lost the track of it.
Its still hidden in my room somewhere..

While replacement spring from S&W was cheap(free) and shipped fast, gun was inop for 5 days.
All because I thought cleaning under it would improve already 100% weapon. Instead, gun went 100% to 0% for 5 days

Don't remove it unless you really really have to!

That made me LOL. I hate it so much when I take something apart and a spring goes shooting around the room, especially with the gray carpet in the room I clean guns in...
