Please humor me with my venting. Over the years I've gone from buying AR's, to buying upper and lower and putting them together, to buying stripped lower and building that, to now building "almost" from scratch. Several frustrating moments for someone with low patience and low ability to sit in one place for any length of time. My top observations that hopefully those that build can relate to, and if you are thinking of building, something to keep in mind:

    1. springs fly - and they will always go where there is no reason they should and be lost forever
    2. due to #1 - buy a couple "oops" kits to have on hand!
    3. get the right tools and blocks - don't try to jerry rig and hope for the best
    4. always one more "part or accessory" that you forgot and have to run out for - usually a Sunday night after everyone's closed
    5. from now on, I will tape the entire upper lower for Christ's sakes - no matter what I do, I end up slipping and scratch something,
my latest patriotic build is no exception, a few scrapes and nicks for sure - loud screams were heard by wife and puppy for every one.
    6. and todays lesson - you have to put dust cover on before you put barrel assembly together - wtf ! I have no patience right now to take the barrel off

With the rant done, here is my latest and most complete build to date. My "Patriotic" build - appropriate to finish today I think with all the crazy anti gun marches!
I'm not totally happy - I will continue to tweek. I went with Viet Nam type used stock and grip for some retro look, but then put a modern MOE foregrip on - still debating if I like the mix of old and new. Had a verticle grip lying around so I threw it on for yuk, yuks. Put a nickel boron bolt in it and and extended latch charging handle. The red magazine looks closer to the red in the lower/reciever in person ( looks more pink in picture, maybe I'll call it my honoring of snowflakes? ), but may still just throw a black one in. Put a 3.5 lb drop in trigger for shits and giggles and a bit oversized trigger guard.
Feel free to give thoughts, my skin is somewhat thick Oh, and yes, still need a rear sight !

I don't care for the Magpul forearm on that build.
It's like putting 24" gold wheels on a '67 Camaro.

    The flag theme is cool.

That's my thought as well. I have a triangular front retention ring so might just grab a triangular forestock as well.

    @ cruzans....
Do you have any plans on a finish or color for the stock and hand guard?

I’m kinda opposite, as I’d change the stock to a MOE fixed instead of changing the handguards.

Cool build though. I am really liking those receivers.

Not sure yet. I don't like the mixed. I wanted to go with the retro butt stock, might do the triangular up front or just go a totally different route. Seeing I have to take the barrel off now to get dust cover on I can start over again - lol.

If you didn’t do it yet there’s no reason to take the barrel off to install the dustcover. Just pull the c clamp with a good set of needle nose pliers and the rod will slide in from the other direction. Pop the clamp back on when it’s in and it’s done. Don’t worry about scratches too much, it’s a gun, if it shoots it isn’t broken.

Hmmm, don't see how that could work. I thought about that, but the forward assist is in the way and you can't slide it in from the other side. If it was slick side maybe? But as soon as I get time I'll check it out again. Thanks!

It needs to flex a bit, but it will work.
