Default Re: Laser light or night sights

I'm a fan of the Crimson Trace grips. I have them on my Taurus 1911. My model does not have the night sights that are apparently available on some models, though I'm really considering getting mine replaced with some.

I actually zeroed my laser in so that if I have a proper sight picture I can't see the dot. Odd perhaps but for me it is a training aid. I suffer from cross dominance in that my left is trying to tell my right hand where to point. If I can see around the slide and spot the dot I know my left eye is interfering. If my right eye is doing its job of looking down the slide and focusing on the front sight though then the laser dot disappears.

I also like the idea that some situations may prevent getting a proper sight picture. Having to shoot from the hip or with the firearm in tight to your chest for retention reasons would make the dot a great tool.

My wife has crimson trace Laser on her M&P Compact. She has neuropathy and can not feel the bottoms of her feet. The laser lets her know when her base is not good because the laser will dance around.

Night sights and a light as a minimum, lasers are great, but have been shown to slow people down when used as the primary sight. When considering non-standard positions, the laser becomes priceless.

Night sights! I have yet to see someone who could use the laser well.

    +1.

Contact distances don't count. Most shooters can point shoot to 7 yards.

Trying to find a laser dot on a moving target in an open environment like a parking lot is hard unless you have a very good index.

Night sight also do not give away your position if you are holed up in a corner of your house waiting for help.

I totally agree. In my opinion, weapon mounted lights are not ideal for handguns, especially if being used for home defense. Think about it, when you raise to shoot, the light is right in line with your neck/head area. If I'm an intruder, it's dark, and all I can see is your light pointed at me...that is where I'm taking aim. As mentioned before, I think the lasers and lights have their place, but my preference is night sights for the reasons stated above.

The use of white light is a sticky subject.

If you need it to identify your target, then you need to use it. There are ways to use it and ways not to.

    Exactly.

Just because a light is ON the weapon, doesn't mean that it has to be illuminated the entire time you have the weapon in play.

Momentary switch. It's called that for a reason.
