    Winner. It's a locking bolt on a P-08 Parabellum ("Luger"). Although I find some of your guesses more entertaining than the actual solution!

    That was actually very hard if my father didn't own one; I've been lusting over for years. The clue is what made me think of that pistol. Without it I would never have guessed it.
