    i'd suggest instead not being surprised by something that is not all that rare and continuing to fight for your life. once you shoot the guy, if he doesn't stop his attack as a result, he is very likely set on killing you--even if he wasn't before you shot him.

    all handguns...including .45acp, .357mag, .44mag, .50DE, etc. etc...are piss poor at physically stopping bad guys. many will psychologically quit after being shot with anything, but unless you get a CNS hit (which is unlikely), you are not going to immediately physically incapacitate the guy. so, it he is on drugs, crazy, or just plain determined, he may well keep coming. he may even bleed out in 10 seconds, but that is plenty of time to finish killing you first.

    Define "close range".

    There is a "close range" at which you'll be lucky to get your pistol drawn and get off 1 shot let alone 5 shots.
