    Question Ballistol Lube

Anyone know a place that has this stuff on the shelf around the Philly area?

Thought I'd try it for my revolvers. Looks like it'll clean and lube the gun and treat the wood grip at the same time.

I worry that some of the cleaners/lubes out there are gonna screw with the finish of my Hogue Laminate Grips.

    Thanks.

Don't know. I bought mine at the Valley Forge gun show. Midway has it also.

You know what's funny... I used Ballistol to "finish" the stock on my old SKS.

I had placed the entire stock in a tub of mineral spirits in order to remove the Cosmoline, and after I had it all removed, I realized that whatever "finish" was on the stock, was now destroyed, and the whole thing had a "whitish haze" to it.

I recalled reading that Ballistol could be used on wood, so I took a little and rubbed it on. Ta-Da! The wood looked great again!

I wiped down the entire stock with the stuff, and never did anything more to it. it looked like every other surplus rifle out there, and didn't have a "shiny" finish like you get with some varnishes.

Aside from the stinky odor of the Ballistol, I loved the way it worked on my wooden stock.

Sorry I can't help with locating it.

    Thumbs up Re: Ballistol Lube

Thanks for the help! Very cool.

I see a lot of comments on the smell of Ballistol... What does it smell like? I saw somewhere that it smells like black licorice, or like Sambucca (spelling?) booze.

If it does, I can live with that. If it tastes like Sambucca, that wouldn't be a bad thing either.

It has an odor like a gym locker room. The odor comes from the principal ingredient of Ballistol aside from mineral oil, and that's butoxyethyanol, aka isobutanol or butyl alcohol. Butyl alcohol is an effective wetting agent and is widely used in many "spray & wipe" type cleaners such as the original 409 and Fantastik, not the current "antibacterial" formulations of the same brand names. Butyl alcohol is also effective as an emulsifier, a compound that facilitates the mixing of oil and water. It's the reason that Ballistol can be mixed with water to form a milky-white liquid which is EXCELLENT for cleaning up firearms which have been fired with corrosive ammo.

The odor of butyl alcohol can act as an asthma attack initiator in some individuals.

    HTH,

    Noah

    Well, I learned something new.

All I know is that it stinks and stinks for a while. If you're married, apply it to a piece of cloth and take it in the house without telling your wife. If no reaction, you're good to go - if she curls her nose and asks if a mouse died in the wall, just tell her you'll look into it, and get that stuff out of the house! LOL

I bought it for cleaning a black powder revolver, but used it for many other things. I oiled all the door hinges in the house with it when I first got it. Oooops! After that, I decided to only use it for outdoor uses.

Ballistol is great for dry hands and as a small wound, like scratches, cleaner.
Wipe down your Glock with it and it will look new. I buy it by the gallon direct from Ballistol USA. The stuff has a interesting history.
