To provide for organizing, arming, and disciplining, the militia, and for governing such part of them as may be employed in the service of the United States, reserving to the states respectively, the appointment of the officers, and the authority of training the militia according to the discipline prescribed by Congress;

§ 311. Militia: composition and classes

(a) The militia of the United States consists of all able-bodied males at least 17 years of age and, except as provided in section 313 of title 32, under 45 years of age who are, or who have made a declaration of intention to become, citizens of the United States and of female citizens of the United States who are members of the National Guard.
(b) The classes of the militia are—
(1) the organized militia, which consists of the National Guard and the Naval Militia; and
(2) the unorganized militia, which consists of the members of the militia who are not members of the National Guard or the Naval Militia.

So my question/ comment is... where can I get my weapon for being part of the unorganized militia?

Do you realize that arming every single citizen on their 17th birthday with a military issue M16 and Beretta 92FS would cost less than 3% of the current defense budget? Add in some training, and maybe you double the costs.

There would have to be some severe penalties for inappropriate use of your issue gun.

Of course then, the honest citizens would break out their rifles and start shooting up the gang members. The streets would be awash with blood. The bodies would stack up like cord wood. Crows would be feasting on the eyes of the dead.

Soon the civil guards would be sent in to restore peace and all weapons would be confiscated and locked in an armoury.

At some point you have to send in ground troops. At that point, every single adult you encounter would be armed. Every single one. It's the reason no has ever even CONSIDERED invading Switzerland, despite having prime real estate smack dab in the middle of 2 World Wars.

Also, can you imagine how much lower our crime rates would be if we had Swiss style gun culture? It would be common to see folks walking along the street with their rifle slung on over their shoulder and sidearm holstered openly. Who the heck is going to try something in that environment when EVERY adult citizen is fully capable of gunning them down?
