    Thumbs down WSSA Redux

After being a member of the WSSA for a number of years, off and on, I quit.

They only have one rifle range and everytime I go to shoot it is being used for PISTOL training.

Seems pretty stupid to me since they have several pistol ranges.

I don't just pack up all my stuff and go without checking the schedule posted on their web page.

In each and every case, the schedule indicated that the rifle range was free.

I emailed both the President and Vice-President but they were too arrogant to reply.

I can't imagine how they can remain in business.

Hmm, thanks for the feedback, I was thinking about joining this range.

I was a member there as well a few years back. I had the same problems as the op. The final nail in the coffin was some of the unsafe behavior I saw there. I was at the rifle range and a father and son duo showed up. The son was in his 40's and the father was in his late 60's. The father sets up a target down range about 50 yards away. He steps about 6 feet to the right of the target stand and tells his son to fire away. After each shot he would walk over to the target and point out to the son where he hit. Now keep in mind that the son was shooting a deer gun, probably a winchester model 70 or remington 700, and had a scope on it the size of the hubble telescope. After seeing this I stood there in shock and disbelief. After one more shot fired the son turns around and asks me with all seriousness why I was not fireing as well. I told him in that I had enough sense to not fire down range while someone was still down there. I gave him a nice long lecture on range safety then I packed up my gear and I have never been back since. I found a new range closer to my home and I have been happy ever since.

I'm new there (joined in Nov.) and have been very happy so far. The Association does have several active clubs that use the facilities, so if the website/calendar is not kept current I can see where that could be a problem at times.

I have been going to participate with these groups (In fact, I went and shot my first IDPA classifier there today), so it is not a problem I've encountered myself.

As for the wildly unsafe act mentioned, there are over 1000 members and I am certain the two people mentioned were not in any official role of the association. I have seen no such unsafe actions and the folks running the groups I have participated in would escort you to the gate for much less than that.

As a private club you get the privilege of using the facilities as your own and there can not be an on staff RSO at all times outside of official club sanctioned activities. Unfortunately, some folks are just stupid it seems, and this may include some fellow members that have not got set straight yet.

IMO, the poster who witnessed this (and appropriately counseled them) should have asked for their names and reported it rather than just never coming back.

I'm really not sure what all WSSA has to offer for long guns yet since that has not been my focus since joining. I do know that for the more serious pistol shooters (especially practical defensive shooting) it has much more to offer than most which is what drew me there over other range options I was looking at.

I was a member for many years but I quit as well.

Ranges were rarely open on weekends due to training or cowboy shoots. Idiots leaving the gate open so that they could let their non member friends in.

The kicker for me was the drive to get 1000 members. The place began to change during the membership push. I may be the exception but I would have paid double or triple the membership rate to keep the club the way it was pre membership push.

Sorry you guys feel that way.

I am usually out there twice a month, and I have never seen any unsafe behaviour at any of the ranges.
I always check the calandar before I go, and most times I am the only one there.

I have been happy there after a few years of membership, but my only complaint is members not cleaning up after their selves.
