Re: 00 buck and 30-06 names question
Likewise, is called 9mm Luger, 9mm Parabellum
The "9mm NATO" appelation is because NATO has standardized on 9x19 ammunition for their firearms. Also 5.56 NATO is a very near equivalent of the 223. Same for the 308 Winchester, which NATO stanbdardized on back in the 50's, calling it the (hold on, are you ready for thei?) "7.62 NATO".
My Aunt and Uncle named their son "William", but then Auntie clled him "Willie", Uncle called him "Will", but us kids always knew him as "Bill". However, his big sister always called him "Billy", and his wife refers to him as "Billie". Go figure. He always was the same old guy, dont' ask mw why.
So that, grashopper, is the real story of "Why". It doesn't have to make sense, it is just how it is.

Re: 00 buck and 30-06 names question
I have NO clue as to why 00buck is so designated. A gauge (12 gauge, etc) is determined by how many lead balls can make a pound of lead, so, it takes 12 lead balls approximately .73 in diameter to make one pound of lead.
A 00 buck ball is .33 caliber. Go figure.
at the turn of the century, the 1903 Springfield was originally chambered for the .30 US, to signify the difference to the 30-40 Krag cartridge.
The government was not happy with that, so the .30-06 was developed, and accepted for military use in 1906, hence the .30 caliber, 1906 designation, or, .30-06 (or .30-aught 6)
The 9mm NATO is the 9mm parabellum (sp), or the common military pistol cartridge accepted by NATO for universal use by NATO allied countries. It's technical designation is the 9X19mm. It's original military designation was the 9mm Luger. Commercial cartridge companies still use the 9mm Luger name.
The .308, or 7.63X51mm NATO is the NATO alliance rifle cartridge, as is the 5.56X45mm NATO. Commercial companies use the .308 Winchester designation for the 7.62X51mm NATO, and the .223 Remington designation for commercial sales for the 5.56X45mm NATO.

Re: 00 buck and 30-06 names question
Just in case it's relevant, 9mm NATO is loaded to higher pressure than the standard 9x19mm you get in stores. It's more like 9mm +P commercial ammo. OK for most guns but not all.

Re: 00 buck and 30-06 names question
Wasn't there a .30-03 (round nose) and when the Germans adopted the spitzer (pointed) bullets with improved ballistics we also adopted a spitzer (in 1906)...the .30-06.

Re: 00 buck and 30-06 names question
Yep. The .30-03 used the 220 grain round nose, flat base bullet, and after the government saw that most of Europe had adapted the superior spitzer design bullets, the US went to the lighter weight 150 grain boat-tail spitzer, adopted in 1906.
The 30-06 can be fired in .30-03 chambers, but the .30-03 cannot be fired in a .30-06 chamber. The .30-06 is .007in shorter than the .30-03.
