Surpressor + Gas Piston = Cleaner Receiver?
I'm curious if anyone can tell me of their experience with a gas piston system keeping you AR cleaner while you run surpressed? I love to shoot while surpressed but the required cleaning of the bolt carrier parts is significant. There are many options for the gas piston and if it will keep the gun cleaner I may give it a try.

the suppressor should have nothing to do with the dirt in your receiver from shooting. having a piston is what will affect cleanliness in this case.

No gas reaches the bolt carrier or receiver. It stops at the piston up front. Connecting rod runs from piston to bolt. You might have to clean short gas tube and piston cylinder more often.

Shooting a suppressed DI rifle will lead to a dirty receiver...and face.
I shoot two LWRC upper rifles with the supressor and both receivers are clean after firing.

Re: Surpressor + Gas Piston = Cleaner Receiver?
I've never gotten dirt on my face from shooting probably 1000 rounds in FA suppressed. One friend did tell me once he got a shot of gas in the eyes from the charging handle (commonly reported issue), but that's never happened to me or my other friends either.
Now, suppressed M-11 - watch out

I run a 9.5" POF piston upper (always suppressed) and I have no issues with gas or dirt.
I have gotten gas in the eye with others ARs, it's a weird sensation...

Re: Surpressor + Gas Piston = Cleaner Receiver?
Thanks for the feedback. That is what I had thought about having a cleaner upper after shooting Gas Piston.
I hear much hype about GP vs DI and I wanted some experienced NFA comments.
Now for the next piece - what conversion kit? Keep in mind I want to keep my A2 front sight base. Bushmaster makes one and I have seen TNW that uses the standard base. They claim a longer stroke reduces wear and carrier tilt while it moves back into the receiver tube.

Host: M6A2, 5.56, 16" barrel
Can: YHM Phantom 556 stainless
Ammo: 62gr FMJBT, 26.7gr Varget (max), Remington 7 1/2 BR primers, Remington or Lapua Brass.
Dry can: very dirty; prima fascia impression is that it is just as dirty as a DI with a suppressor, except that of course the BCG internals are clean.
Wet: s/very/very\ very\ very/g
77gr SMK/19.0gr IMR4198 (max)/7 1/2 Rem BR/ Rem brass:
Dry:
Much cleaner, but still dirtier than my (DI) 7 1/2" SBR with a Noveske KX3. Again BCG internals are clean.
Wet: again, dirtier, mostly due to the increased pressure and condensation inside the upper and barrel.Last edited by HCE; March 4th, 2010 at 12:44 PM.

Re: Surpressor + Gas Piston = Cleaner Receiver?
i don't have a supressor yet, but there is a huge differance in my POF 416 Piston upper and my Colt DI upper. i will be building more piston guns in the future.
