So I did it - I finally went and did it...
American Arms and Ammo has had some very nice reviews from folks here, and Target World (my other local shop) has had the opposite, so I took my business to the former.
I walked in thinking I'd just look around - but the combination of me just having been paid, having two additional checks coming this month, and seeing a very nice 9mm for ~$300 means I walked out with my first ever firearm purchase. Also, the fact that it's ambidextrous made me a very happy man.
A used Ruger P85 - in almost bran new condition - with a box of ammo and a cleaning kit. It also came with the original case, booklet, extra mag, and reloader.
I brought her home, read the manual cover to cover, repeatedly worked the mechanisms while empty (cocking, decocking, taking it down, putting it back together, a few dry fires, safety operation, mag loading/unloading), then loaded it (safety on!!), cocked it, unloaded it, rinse and repeat.
Holding the thing in my hand is kind of awe inspiring. It's heavier than I'd though it would be, especially when fully loaded.
Anyway, the only thing I am missing now is a good left-handed CC holster.
I wanted to take a moment and very sincerely thank everyone on here that's helped me learn so much in the past few weeks, and those who will continue to help me as I hang out here and try to gain experience.

These are actually OWB, but hold rather close to the body and conceal fairly well. Just not quite as concealable as IWB.
ETA: If you really want IWB, this is a great place to start... http://www.crossbreedholsters.com/IW...%2cProductName

While many claim to support the right, precious few support the practice.

Good Luck and it looks like a very clean pc.
I have a P89 that I bought new back in '94.
The Ruger's do not bring the coin/prestige that some guns due but they are tanks and they shoot well.
Safe Shooting.

First off congrats on your new/first piece. Its funny how many people have a hard time at target world. the guys there can be kind of uptight sometimes but if you want to lean to shoot walk in to the range introduce your self and say hi my name is ruger guy and i don't know how to shoot. that will go along way. good luck man we shoot there 3 times a month.

Good luck..Rugers are workhorses..once you buy one there like tattoos... you will buy more!!you will find it is heavy and bulky to carry(no big deal really)but then you will probably buy a glock or s/a xd to carry...they do shoot very well..

My first pistol was a P944 which is just the .40 cal version of that pistol. They are great pistols, a bit on the bulky side and have a whole lot of rattle, but they are fantastic starter pistols. you can beat on them at much as you would like, and they will come asking for more. Use it in good health!

Congrats on the new gun. I have a P89 that I bought new in 1992. They're built like tanks (And almost as heavy.) They're a good, solid gun for the money.

Rugers are great guns! I have three that live with me... my P345 & GP100 & my wife's SP101. No problems or complaints.
Congrats!Let us never forget the sacrifice of those who have fought for us all.
