Re: First Gun - newbie
I may try to make it there. I will be returning from a wedding in NJ that day and will probably be home in the afternoon. What time does it take place?
Another question, what type of case do you suggest I buy for the gun? I would like something that has a lock. Where should I shop? I was actually thinking of just buying one of those fireproof safes at walmart and putting some cushion inside it.

Re: First Gun - newbie
Fireproof safes use a water loaded protective filling to extend burn time survivability.
Water + guns are generally a VERY BAD IDEA.
You can find dedicated gunsafes that will serve your purpose well for home storage, and locking cases are available in various sizes/shapes/materials.
The last Gander Mtn I visited had a good selection of them.
Here's a good place to start:

Good luck and welcome to the forum!

Re: First Gun - newbie
I have a Model 65 as well (4" stainless). It was the first gun I bought, and it was specifically for home defense. I've never had a single problem with it. I think you'll be quite happy with your purchase, with nary a moment of regret. By the way, if you find a nice holster for it, let me know what you went with.
I was thinking about bringing the kids to the shoot on Sunday (by the way, what's the policy with kids at these events?), and if you hadn't bought the 65, you could've put a few through mine. But then my stinkin' company decided to send me to merry old unarmed England instead, so I never signed up (besides, the thread went over 200 pages).

Re: First Gun - newbie
Went out the range today and finally tried out some .357 rounds, as I have been practicing with .38 special. What a difference! The recoil actually hurt my hand after a rounds. I think I am sticking with the .38 special for practice due to the recoil. O, and cost
Dicks had 10% off of .357 this week, so I picked up a few boxes.

Re: First Gun - newbie
I felt the same way after shooting .357 for the first time out of my 6" 686. Now mine is a little bigger than yours so the perceived recoil is less, but none the less I found it uncomfortable. After a little more time spent with .357 I found it much easier and more comfortable to shoot, and just plain fun to boot (especially when shooting objects rather than just paper). I think once you get over the initial shock of the increase in recoil you will realize it isn't so bad and maybe grow to like it even. Good Luck!

Re: First Gun - newbie
I use a .38 spcl and for me its punchy. I tried Frenchys .357, it wasn't a snubby like the .38 spcl and I found the recoil to be much less, even when there were +P in it.
Actually I liked his .357 better. I found it more manageable.
What were you using in the .38? Hollows? SJ? FMJ? Just curious.
