.223 loads for SBR
Hello,
I have recently completed an SBR build (around a 7.5" 'Diplomat' from Noveske in 5.56) and, while impressed with the fireworks just ahead of the muzzle, I have sought to find a more efficient load for use with such a short barrel.
My friend Marty, of .458 SOCOM fame, modeled the following for me in Quikload:
19.0 gr IMR4198 (MAX!)
77gr SMK
7 1/2BR primers
2.260" COAL
This should burn 90% in the barrel and produce around 2000 ft/sec.
I started working up the load last night and plan on testing for function and signs of excessive pressure this weekend. I thought that others may find this information useful.
This is probably not very optimal for longer barreled rifles, I generally use 24.ish gr of Varget or RE15 with 77gr Sierra pills in 16" rifles. This may actually be a good load for people with TC/contenders looking to push bigger pills more optimally.

EDIT:
The 77gr SMK/Remington 7 1/2 /19.0gr of IMR4198 appears to run just fine in my SBR with slight primer flattening. I will chrono the load and test it for accuracy as soon as it warms up a bit. COAL was 2.260"Last edited by HCE; February 21st, 2010 at 06:56 PM.

Re: .223 loads for SBR
Thank you for posting this, I am currently going through the form 1 to get a 7.5" diplomat as well. My current loads are 25.3gr Varget pushing a 69gr SMK out of a 16" barrel w an approx average of 2650fps. Out of a 20" im getting about 2750-2800. Do you think this load would be incompatible with the diplomat? Though I could get over it I would like to have one universal .223 load. Thanks for any help you can give.
