Re: duracoat
Duracoat is a good product and you don't have to sent the firearm out to have it done. You can do it yourself at home. They give you explicit directions on how to apply it. One thing though, it does add thickness to wherever you apply it. On the outside of a 45 should be no problem but you would want to keep it off anywhere that tight tolerances are (slide rails, etc.). If it is applied properly and cured properly it is pretty tough, but remember it is a coated on material, not like bluing so it can be prone to scratching.

Re: duracoat
You will be better served getting a resin finish on a handgun.
Duracoat is too thick to do anything but the absolute exterior. It's Polane industrial paint.
Resins like Gun-Kote and CeraCoat, etc are harder and thinner and can be applied to allsurfaces. MUCH better choice for a handgun.

Re: duracoat
I had my FAL Duracoated and I agree it's pretty thick. Too thick I think for a handgun.
