Which Cheap AK to buy?
Not starting a war, but looking for a cheap AK 7.62x39. Can get:
Yugoslavian AK-47 Rifle M70AB2T with underfolder stock for $490
assembled by century arms
Hungarian AMD-65 AK-47 rifle, FEG receiver, w/ side folding stock for $399
don't like the permanently attached muzzle brake or front pistol grip
Romanian AK-47 NDS1P/TGI underfolder $429
put together by Tennesse guns inc., synthetic handgaurds
Romanian AK-47 WASR10/63M Rifle, $399
has laminated wood stock & front end, assembled by century arms
All of the above are currently listed on JG sales.
I want a decent, functional AK, but do not want to pay a premium for a top shelf one.

Re: Which Cheap AK to buy?
Of your choices, I would suggest the Yugoslavian. Although I like the looks of underfolders, I didn't like shooting one.
I have a Romanian WASR10. It was cheap, and it goes bang every single time.

Re: Which Cheap AK to buy?
Get the WASR with the wood. The Yugo is nice but you may grow tired of the UF stock. The Yugo, WASR, and AMD are are all made by CAI and all have new barrels. All will have he Tapco G2 trigger as well. The Romy and the AMD will also have chrome lined barrels if that matters to ya. I love my WASR and it fuctions flawlessly. I love my Yugo RPK too. Go with the wood WASR for your first.

Go with the Romy WASR-10 with the wood. They are the only ones with chrome chambers and barrels. They look like crap but as a previous poster commented they always go bang. As far as cosmetics on them, AKs are an utilitarian machine tool. They are designed to function, not look pretty.

Re: Which Cheap AK to buy?
The WASR seems to be the best option. As others before me have menitioned, they may not be pretty, but that was not the purpose of the AK. I would steer away from Underfolders and Vertical Fore-grip AK's for two reasons;
1: The underfolding stock, while visually appealing, makes it difficult to maintain a correct cheek weld. As the AK style of weapon is already not endowed with the best sights, I would try to avoid anything that would detract from practical accuracy even further.
2: The vertical grip can make it diffcult to insert a fresh magazine into the weapon, due to the rocking motion required to lock an AK magazine into place.
Personally, I'd buy the Romanian WASR10 and go home a happy man, as I'm currently in the market for the same thing.Oath Keeper, MMIX - Ad Infinitum

Re: Which Cheap AK to buy?
None are made by CAI. They import stuff.
They import low-cap WASRs and farm many - but not all of them - out for 922-compliance rebuilds for the varying degrees of pre-ban config they sell them in.
They imported de-milled mil-surp Yugo parts sets by the train load and farmed them out for build-up with USA parts for the 922-compliant pre-ban configs they are sold in.
Same for the Hungarian AMD parts sets, sans the war issues the Yugos had.
Same for the Golanis, C93s, CR-15's, Sterling carbines, and so on.Last edited by nfafan; February 13th, 2010 at 04:30 PM.

Re: Which Cheap AK to buy?
Any one of the four you mention (above) should fit your requirements just fine. Folding stocks can develop a little wobble with age, fixed stock AKs obviously don't have this issue.
Also note Yugo and other AKs with domestic-made barrels aren't likely to be chromed. This means you'll need to keep up with cleaning after use. Search this forum for corrosive ammunition for more information.Gloria: "65 percent of the people murdered in the last 10 years were killed by hand guns"

Re: Which Cheap AK to buy?
Holy Jesus guitly of a technicality. Where do I get lined up and blindfolded?
Sorry CAI imports them, has them built by sub-contractors then sells them to retailers under the CAI name. Sorry.
I understand your frustration with the which AR/AK threads, and I agree there is quite a few. But just ignore them if they annoy you or at the very least use a new .gif. That one is getting as old as the "Which one should I buy" threads. BTW NFAFAN, love ya man
