Default Sheriff Durante (Montgomery County) Passed away

I'm not sure if this is the correct place to discuss this. Mods-please move if need be.

I just got word that Sheriff Durante passed away 2/10/10 at about 0101hrs. I have no further details at this time and haven't found any news articles or press releases related to the matter.

My condolences to his family and friends.

That being said, a lot of us know he wasn't exactly a gun-friendly Sheriff. Many of you remember the infamous press release about not being allowed to carrying in County Parks and trails even with a LTCF. That press release quickly and mysteriously disappeared without issuing any corrective statements. I believe he was also guilty of passing bad info about OC.

In the event of a Sheriff passing away-

Will a new Sheriff be temporarily appointed by a County official?

Will this effect renewal of or issuance of LTCF? I have a scheduled day off of work next week that I was going use to renew mine.

Wow, that's surreal. I know the guy was old, but I also have seen him many times on the bike path (conducting illegal searches of passers by with his dog) and he always appeared to be in pretty good physical shape.

Can't say I'll miss him, but I am sure he does have a family that should be in our thoughts.

    That's how I feel too.

The replacement for a Sheriff who leaves office for whatever reason is appointed by the governor until the next election.....

Condolences to the family.. pro-gun or anti-gun.. I heard he was fair to all equally......even if his ideas were off base and illegal....

Hmm... I'm a Montgomery county resident... I wonder if someone with zero law enforcement qualifications or experience could win that election.

I was thinking the same thing. Spending 5 Days a week in Norristown and evicting people from their homes are not exactly the biggest incentives though. Maybe I should move to Bucks - I love Doylestown.

I don't see why not, it worked for him.
While many claim to support the right, precious few support the practice.

My condolences to his family, even if I didn't agree with his views. And, if this is indeed true:

then condolences to all you MontCo residents as well, 'cause I doubt Rendell is gonna give you someone who's LTCF and NFA friendly.

Look what happened in Luzerne County.... he appointed someone that used to be a Chief of Police over the acting sheriff.... what a kick in the teeth
