    Default .308 Ammo

    Hello,

I shoot a .308 for most of my big game hunting and want to practice a bit with it over the summer. I'm looking for a round that I can go to the range and shoot cheaply but will be safe for the firearm in regards to powder and pressure. Basicly looking for a .308 "plinking" bullet.

I like the South African surplus. But I bought back when it was $25 a battle pack.

    Reload.

Use a cast bullet in the 150-170 gr range and 12 to 13 grs of Unique powder. It don't get any cheaper than that.

Don't these take a higher firing pin strength than normal .308? I guess "buy a few, test, THEN buy in bulk"

I shoot it through a DS Arms FAL and have never had any problem with it going bang.

South African, Hirtenberger (Austrian), and Portuguese surplus are the best quality and most readily available. all should run fine in any bolt-action 308. it's not until you get to semi-autos that the rifle can get finicky.

DAG is readily available but i have no experience with it.

Brown Bear is ok, but you may get sticky bolt and it is not very accurate. Silver Bear is better, but pricier.

Georgia Arms may be a good option, also.

unless you have done your homework, stay away from Indian and Czech.

    avoid Pakistani ammo altogether.
