If you were saying 500-600 I might bite that it will travel the distance, but to think that you are going to achieve "groups" at that range is a little bit of a stretch. Not enough powder or weight....

6.8 will max out in the 600yds range also... Here is a side by side of 55gr 5.56 and 90gr 6.8

No Not with the kind of rifle set up were talking about in this thread . But you never mentioned anything about accuracy standards in your post I quotted first .I dont know what kind of shooting experience you have at distance but with the right rifle and shooter the heavy 223 will still score well at 800 , and has even been shot at 1000!I admit not the best for that range But then again you didnt ask about that either.

There is some truth to that. The 6PPC has been taken to 1000 yards with quite a bit of success without wind. I have one .223 that shoots under .5 moa all day. With a calm day it would go deep quite well. Hell, at 600 yards the .223 guns tend to walk all over the 30-06 at Camp Perry (although the platform matters).

Powder and weight only have to do with drop and energy unless we're trying to avoid dropping through the sound barrier and the problems associated with that......(in which case the .308 isn't that impressive either).

To stay on topic.....while a longer barrel is not more inherently accurate, a 24" .223 barrel can add some speed to the equation.

I taught Chuck Norris to bump-fire.
