That is really sad for the deputy. You know that he is second guessing as to whether or not he could have done more to prevent that from happening. But he kept a cool head. It could have been a tragedy for the officers family as well.

Its very good that he kept cool in the situation, its too bad the man couldn't be talked down.

It could have went very differently if that deputy could have found his way to cover quickly and engaged him as a target.

Interesting. I'd be interested in hearing from the cops here what they thought of the officer's reaction. It seems to me the best response would be fast moving to the other side of the car while drawing.

Officer 1 - "You want the left button, instead of the right."
    Officer 2 - "Oh...hehe."

    On a serious note -

Who's the d-----nozzle that drove by in the opposite direction and didn't stop when they saw the police officer with his hands on his head? They obviously had slowed down and I KNOW they were watching what was happening - the simple act of stopping the vehicle and distracting the perp as he turned to see what was going on = situation ended.

Very good job on the LEOs part keeping cool and talking to the perp.

I understand your post however, we have no idea nor will we ever have any idea what Mr. Cook would have done if the civilian car driving by would have stopped to help the officer. Not that I'm a bad guy but at that point, multiple threats, take out the known threat first, officer, then turn on the driver and or other occupants second...no win for anyone. I think the civilian probably did the best thing, kept on driving and hopefully called 911 to advise what they saw.

Continuing on...interesting video. Yes, the officer did do the best he could given the circumstances. He did not 100% focus on the driver as he instructed the driver to exit the vehicle which could have given him that extra second but overall, he did great. Very commendable

I do not know who the first voices are at the beginning of the video..perhaps the news agency or officer's editing the video...perhaps a ride along, who knows...At the end of the video, you hear voices again and it appears to be an overlay of the video. Perhaps a chief or supervisor or some LE expert talking through the video.

I'm a little surprised that the LEO did not pull his gun out after the driver put his away and had his hands out to his sides. The driver even let the cop put his hand near his gun without reacting.

I probably wouldn't have done any different or better in this situation as it unfolded, but the Monday morning QB in me says that if the cop did draw his gun when he had a chance, he might have prevented a suicide.

That officer is one lucky man. I'm happy to see that the BG did not shoot the officer. That could have ended very badly. Besides him shooting himself, he deserves credit for not being an asshole and going on a shooting spree.

2:40 that car drives by. I wonder what they were thinking?
