An assault weapon is a hammer, screwdriver, kitchen knife, baseball bat, brick... all of which can and have been used to "assault" people.

In England an assault weapon is also a Beer Pint which they are trying to outlaw because they have been used as weapons in bar brawls.

An assault weapon is also a spoon which has been used by prison inmates to kill.

It seems that Maryland, NY and NJ need to expand their ban lists.

Gun banners are looking for easy solutions to their crime problems. They don't want to do the hard thing and execute murderers, they want the easy solution... ban the guns, then ban the knives, ban the bats, ban the forks, ban bricks... what they need to do is BAN HANDS, since anything you can hold in your hands is a potential weapon.

They have not yet come to the understanding that peace and safety is not something that comes natural. This planet is based on an food chain where animals eat each other. That is the natural order of things. The peace and safety that most humans desire is an "artificial construct". If they want to maintain this artificial construct then they need to enforce tough penalties against people who do violent crimes. Without such deterrent, criminals will use whatever tools are available to them to commit crimes against other humans, including strangling with bare hands. Harsh penalties is the only thing that will keep some people from committing violent crimes.

Gun banners say they want tough gun laws... well how about tough laws that execute teenage gang-bangers for murder. Are they tough enough for that... or will they give in to the sobbing cries of the little bastards and their families.

If it can happen here, it can happen anywhere. Rendell only needs to get enough people to agree with his "police are out-gunned" philosophy and it will hit home with PA residents, too, many of which are law abiding, gun toting friends and family of mine.
I just informed 6 friends who live in the PRMD. If they tell two friends and they tell two friends... etc.

I also agree that it would be one strong message if gun manufacturers would pack up and quit sending tax dollars to legislators who oppose their jobs.

Hopefully the SCOTUS will rule for incorporation, and render much of this legally indefensible.

I can't understand the conflicting rulings of the past, where some court cases ruled that 'arms' are what is 'commonly used by the military', and yet we can't get the same 'arms' as what our military uses. Then, you have the cases where they want to ban anything but 'sporting' arms (aka assault weapons ban).

IF the SCOTUS rules for incorporation, it would seem that States have a problem of enforcing any kind of registration or restriction, as what works for 'Free Speech' should work for 'RKBA'. Numerous cases have ruled that the State cannot enforce registration to exercise free speech, as it is a fundamental right. Of course, striking all the current stupid laws down will take time and money, as we all know that States will ignore such things until challenged in the legal system...

    Grrrr....

Once again, I am glad I live just north of the M/D instead of just south. As was stated, the responsibility is in the hands of MD residents. I don't know if there is a whole lot that we can do from here except urge our friends in MD to put some opposition into effect. The problem with MD is that Baltimore is one of the most crime ridden cities in the country and the sheeple have been convinced that stricter gun laws are going to help. They haven't realized that guns used in crimes are not normally obtained through legal means.

Has anyone heard of a rationale for this law? What purported need does this bill pretend to meet?

None needed. A politician's feel-good fix; pass another ban. Being so close to DC and the cesspool of Baltimore doesn't help either.

    Possible attempt to help the folks in MD;

write the gun companies based there and suggest to them that given the nature of THEIR business, and the anti-gun nature of MD, that they really ought to move from MD to PA or VA - and take their jobs and taxes with them where they wil be more welcome.

And perhaps cc these letters to the MD senators and congressmen.

Mostly a politician looking to make a name for himself.

Unfortunately politicians seem to get more attention for how many New Stupid Laws they pass rather then how many Old Stupid Laws they repealed.

We could give them recognition if they'd do it. They don't get very much attention for several reasons but one of them is that they don't do it very much so there's usually not anything to tell.

That list looks copied from PRNJ, right down to "(15) Colt AR-15, CAR-15, and all imitations except Colt AR-15 Sporter H-BAR rifle"

Not sure if this has been brought up yet or not.....

But the proposed law says "to restrict the transporting of assault weapons into Maryland"

Doesn't the federal transport law make that impossible?

If this law is passed and I am traveling down I-95 or I-70 from PA to VA, I would be an automatic felon.

I moved out of MD about 8 years ago, and the only thing I miss is the Chesapeake Bay.
