    Default "Don't CLOSE me, Bro!"

What exactly are the guidelines regarding the closing of threads?

    For the most part:

    Duplicates (oldest thread usually survives).

Moderator discretion (usually when things just get out of control and the discussion is no longer productive).

I think more clarification would be helpful here. There have been a number of threads that have been closed during recent weeks and months that I did not expext to see closed. For example, threads regarding 'neg rep' seem to get closed pretty quickly... One of those threads was closed before it even stated. This would seem to indicate the silencing of dissenting views.

Maybe I am mistaken and there are some mechanics at play that I am not aware of? Are there specifig guidelines regarding "moderator discretion?" If not, perhaps there should be? I know I would like to know if and when my actions will get a thread closed.

There's the answer to this specific question about an unnamed specific thread.

Adult/mature/civilized discussion is welcome. Repetitive/childish/snarky/off-topic comments - not so much.

They are duplicates, and until the owner indicates otherwise, he is aware of the feedback received and requires no further input on that specific issue.

    Perfect examples.

The first is an example of the " Adult/mature/civilized discussion" I just mentioned.

The latter is an example of the "Repetitive/childish/snarky/off-topic comments."

No, because by definition, "discretion" is basically opinion. We all answer to the owner, and occasionally he makes clarifications on our actions, but by and large, we get pretty good report cards.

And despite all the whining and hand wringing about changes (not directed personally at you), membership, and the percentage of that membership that finds a way to do more than just post on the interwebs, continues to grow.

I'll be painfully blunt here....when it finally gets down to it, its really admin/staff discretion.

    Period.

in the same way we don't parse out each of the site rules to the nth degree, we wont be parsing out every reason a thread would/could get closed. The 2 largest reasons are already stated.

generally, the last post in the closed thread will be by a staff member indicating why the thread is closed.
