They are on the part legally defined as the frame or receiver.

Different brands put them in different places, rifles and shot guns will be else where from a pistol. Military will be in different places also. Old guns may not have one. It will be on the frame somewhere. Look around and you should be able to find it.
I always stressed to my son"one shot one kill that was all that is needed". When He came home from Marine Corp Boot camp He was telling me about the Marines stressing "ONE SHOT ONE KILL" He looks at me and the light bulb went on Dad was now a whole lot smarter than he was 13 weeks ago.

On a Ruger .22 Semi auto handgun, they are on the "upper receiver", that is the part designated as the "firearm". On revolvers they can be on the bottom of the grip, the bottom of the frame or the side of the frame. On semis, typically on the frame, not the barrel. On a rifle or shotgun, on the receiver. On an AR they are on the lower receiver, typically on the mag well, left side.

As you can see, it could be anywhere, but it is always placed on the part that is considered the firearm. Now, old firearms may not even have a serial number, they weren't required to have one. This does not make it illegal, if sold, the forms just show "no serial number" in the s/n blocks.
