Question about CCW Eligibility
My wife has recently taken a serious interest in becoming a concealed carry permit holder. The thing is we noticed something on the Westmoreland Co. CCW permit form that we aren't sure about. The bottom part of the form states "I am of sound mind and have never been committed to a mental institution or mental healthcare facility".
My wife is most certainly of sound mind but at age 15 she signed herself into AVH's mental healthcare ward as a means to get away from her abusive parents and get control of her life. Does this constitute as something that would make her ineligible? Is she unable to get a license to carry in PA now?
Any help would be appreciated, and thanks in advance.

Re: Question about CCW Eligibility
It is my understanding that you are only ineligible if you were involuntarily committed (302). If your wife signed herself in, she should be good to go.

committed and volunteered are 2 different situations, and if she was under 18 at the time i do not think it would be on record anywere anyway. generally in my opinion is commetted is forced against your will via a police escort or a court order. but somene here should know definitly

Re: Question about CCW Eligibility
In Pa. we have no "concealed carry permits". We have Pennsylvania License to Carry Firearms.
It affords you the ability to:
1) CC outside your abode or fixed place of biz (IE: public) Statewide minus the prohibited places. (Ref: 18Pa.C.S.§6106)As you can see, it covers things other than CC.
2) carry a firearm (OC or CC) during a Pa. declared state of emergency. (Ref: 18Pa.C.S.§6107)
3) Carry OC or CC in a vehicle (Ref: 18Pa.C.S.§6106)
4) Carry OC on public streets of Philadelphia. (Ref: 18Pa.C.S.§6108)
5) Allows a person to loan you a handgun (Ref: 18Pa.C.S.§6115)
6) Exempts you from the prohibition of carrying in State Parks (CC only though)
7) Exempts one from the fed gun free school zone act provided the school is in the same state as the license holder.
My understanding is as the others have commented. "Involuntary" commitment is a disqualifier. Not voluntary._________________________________________

Re: Question about CCW Eligibility
Good info PA Patriot. I knew that it was more than a concealed carry permit (and am really just used to calling it that more than anything) but Numbers 5 and 7 I was unaware of. First off, without a license one can't loan you a gun? How do they know who's gun it is without registration? And number seven is stating that you are allowed to carry a gun in schools? Can you explain that one more?
Thanks for the help everyone.

Re: Question about CCW Eligibility
No, number 7 does not allow you to carry in schools, it allows you to carry within 1000 feet of a school zone.
ETA: Here's a link to the GFSZ act:

Re: Question about CCW Eligibility
Actually, upon re-reading the GFSZ act, a LTCF does allow you to carry into schools, HOWEVER, state law still forbids it, unless of course you want to be the test case for the "for other lawful purpose" clause .
