    Default M1 Garand pronunciation

As any die-hard Garand fan (or a little research) will tell you, the proper pronunciation should rhyme with "errand". However, the vast majority of people believe that it's pronounced with the accent on the second syllable.

Honestly, I've started pronouncing it the wrong way when I'm around people I don't know very well, simply because I've found that it's useless to try to explain. Everyone seems CERTAIN that their way is correct. I've given up using the correct pronunciation just to save myself the argument.

What about others? How do you say it?

This is kinda like the ageless debate over Koch in HK being pronounced as " Coke " ( correct ) or "Kotch" ( incorrect)

Im a huge HK fan and even I pronounced it " Kotch " for years.

Yeah, I've heard that before... and it's kinda the same thing, where you use the incorrect way to avoid being bashed to saying it "wrong."

Like you, I used to pronounce it the "proper"(gerrand) way... but then everyone else is always trying to correct you(like you said) and all, so I just kind of fell into the crowd in pronouncing it the "wrong"(ga-rand) way...

I was a helper at Camp Perry in the fifties and there was a great debate one year about this. As it turned out we were all pronouncing it incorrectly, including the government. (GA rand is wrong).
But, like a lot of other things, we continue to do it wrong until wrong becomes accepted as right. (Think about it: Notre Dame, Celtic etc.)

and, how do you pronounce carbine?

btw, the Garand family pronounces garand so that it rhymes with errand, so i would say that is the proper pronunciation...after all, it is their name.

You wouldn't of happened to be at Camp Perry this past weekend? This topic was brought up by CMP' s Gary Anderson during a Garand Master Instructor seminar. Gary said he was corrected by JC Garand's son on the pronunciation.
