REM 700 .308 winchester?

me and my friend went shooting this weekend,he has a .308 rem 700 and we got into a conversation about using .308 NATO ammo in a 700 bolt action rifle chambered in .308 winchester, ok what i always heard was 7.62x51mm 308 NATO ammo has less chamber pressure then .308 win. hunting ammo so you could use the NATO ammo in your bolt action rifle but you could not use winchester .308 ammo in a 7.62x51 NATO chambered rifle, kinda like you could use .223 ammo in a 5.56 NATO chambered rifle but not 5.56 NATO in a .223 chambered rifle, i remember hearing about a guy trying to use .308 bolt action hunting ammo reloads in a semi auto type rifle and he had all kinds of cycle issues,and was told it was the higher pressure and lighter cases on the hunting ammo stretched the cases. soooooooooo what i am trying to ask is can .308 NATO ammo be used in a .308 winchester bolt action rifle? any input or past experience would helpful.........thanks....fred
