Heads Up On Using a GPS

I wanted to give a heads up on something that happened to me this past week so others can avoid this situation. I made a road trip to Tennessee, did my research before I left on the states I would travel through so I could comply with the local laws regarding CC.

After one stop in Hartsville, I selected my next destination on the GPS and was driving along, when all of a sudden I saw an unexpected sign, "Welcome to Georgia",

Holy crap! There was about a 10 mile swing through Georgia that came back up to Chattanooga which I hadn't anticipated and I was unsure of Georgia's laws.

So, for about ten miles I held my breath, set the cruise control on the speed limit and drove as carefully as I could. I thought PA had a reciprocity agreement with GA, which I have since confirmed, but not knowing was sort of scary.

Whenever I drive in and around Philly, I check these things out, but didn't in this case. I'll be more careful next time.

GPS should not replace situation awareness while in a vehicle. You should always have an idea of what the lay of the land is where you are going.

That's a scary 10 mile moment! I would have stopped when I saw the "Welcome" sign, and quickly stored the gun and ammo. Glad it worked out for you.

The title of this thread is misleading. It should be called "I held my breath when I entered another state while carrying a weapon and not fully knowing their laws."

GPS had nothing to do with your "problem" any more then ethanol, carbon credits, Al Gore, the war for oil or American monetary policy did. For what it is worth, I think biofuels are bullshit.

Good guidance would go like this, when traveling, make a handy cheat sheet if you will of the states you will travel to and through and the neighboring states that you may enter. The cheat sheet will cover the laws, reciprocity and all pertinent topics relating to the carry of weapons, common law marriage, age of consent and popularity of NASCAR.

I use one constantly on my job (I'm a paratransit driver). If going somewhere I've never been, after the driver's perspective view pops up, I tap on the screen to get the overhead map view, then zoom out to see the entire route from beginning to end. This would definitely point out state lines.

I have seen in other peoples cars GPS being off/lost repeatedly

I drive over 130,000 miles a year and never use a GPS, just a plain old Rand McNally Map Book
