ruger p95 or ria 1911?

Hey guys, I know I was set on a 9mm, and I had my heart set on a ruger p95 at 340 at a local shop. Then I came across the rock island 1911. I have ALWAYS wanted a 1911...price was decent around 417...thought ammo would be expensive but for cheaper stuff only like 16 bux a box while 9mm is around 11 or 12...not too bad....so it's between these two....granted this gun will be a range gun, i go about twice a month and only shoot about 100 rounds, a sometimes carry piece, and a home defense...what would you go for?

RIA makes a good 1911, everything you need, nothing you don't. another member here, Bruce, has one, and gave it a good review, and according to him, their customer service is top notch.

I've had the pleasure of shooting both the P95 and the RIA 1911. Both of them are tanks. Really ugly tanks, but as in the nature of such a beast they always get you where you need to be.

Personally I'd go with the RIA 1911, because if you're looking for a cheap reliable .45 there you go. the P95 has the same capacity as the 1911 does, so you're really not winning anything there.. and the 1911, however plain and basic as it is, looks better than the P95 imo.

RIA 1911 sells anywhere from $400 to $550, P95 is probably $300-400.

the basic RIA 1911 also appeared like a good deal to me also. Saw one at a shop awhile back and was suprised to see it priced at $400. Very basic military style 1911. Not a bad entry level piece.

I have to vote for the P95. I own one and yes it is heavy but it really is built to last. My P95 is very accurate also. get a couple 15rd mags and youre good to go. Im not familiar with the1911 you are talking about so I cant comment on it. Which ever way you go good luck with the new purchase. das

If I remember right, the P95 is available in .45 acp! Could have the best of both worlds! Regardless, I'm not much help, I think either would serve you well!

You can get a Ruger in .45, either the P97 or the P90, the P97 was based on the P95 (the P97 was discontinued in 2004, so you'd be looking for a used one). I have a P90 and 2 RIA's, I started with a Gov't model and then bought the tactical model. Both shoot very good. I then used the Gov't model as a base and did some upgrades. My Ruger is a good solid accurate gun. My opinion, if you ever wanted a .45, go for the RIA. It's a good starter and if later you decide it's not for you, it's easy to sell and get your money back.

The Top one is the modified RIA Gov't model, the Middle is the RIA Tactical, the Lower is a Taurus PT1911.

I own a few Ruger P series pistols. I enjoy them and still shot them, not as much as i used to. Never had an issue with them.

But the nice thing about ANY 1911, you can change, add, remove what ever you want to make it look, feel, function, and shoot like you want it too. Its kinda like the AR of the handgun world. Not as easy and "plug and play", but the parts are out there. Probably a little cheaper than buying a gun in that part configuration.
Grips, safties, slide release, beaver-tail, mag-wells, slides, barrels, triggers.....ect

Just like Xring did to his Gov' model.
