Default What do you know about M1 Garands?

    Myself? I know nothing..

I was at a local shop the other day and I stumbled upon a decent looking M1 Garand on the shelf.

The wood was cracked but appeared to be original. I asked someone there what they know about it. He said that the wood is original as well as the gas tube because it was forged a certain way (I forget the term? Drop?) also the internals appeared worn but reparkerized. The info is as follows:

    Springfield Armory 1952

There was a P in a circle stamped on the barrel and stock.

The other numbers were as follows that I saw

    D28287-195A
    B-18

They were asking a flat 1000 for it. Should I got back and put it on layaway?

I don't know that much about Garands, so I don't have that much info for you. I do think that's probably a bit cheap for a used Garand that has cracked wood. For that kind of money you could buy a brand new one from the CMP like the "Springfield Special". It's a refinished USGI parts, with some new ones possibly manufactured. http://www.thecmp.org/m1garand.htm For spending a grand, I think it's a better option. You could spend less and buy one in probably the same shape from the CMP. Either way, I'd think twice before I bought it.

    This is true.

However, I'm sort of partial to used military surplus rifles that are almost original. The cracked wood honestly isn't that bothersome to me. I just like to sit and wonder about the history that the rifle has seen. All that stuff adds character to me.

If that's the case, spend way way less money on one from the CMP. They're "original surplus" rifles that were used in the military and have plenty of history on them. They will have plenty of character, don't sound liek they'd be in any worse shape, and you'll still spend quite a bit less on them. This way you don't have to spend as much to get the same quality of rifle.

Well then look at getting one of the lesser grades. Best thing to do would be to take a trip out to the North Store and pick out a rack grade. Some really nice rifles can be found out there with near new condition barrels.

This is just my opinion.....I would NOT spend $1000 on a shooter Garand. Maybe if it was in great shape, or a correct Winchester or International Harvester Garand.

Even if you don't go the CMP route, I have recently seen decent looking "shooter" Garands like you describe at Gunshows (recently at Lebanon and Harrisburg) going for $700-$800.

One thing to consider before buying a Garand, surplus ammo has been drying up and what is out there is getting pricey. You do NOT want to shoot commercial .30-06 in a Garand.

I don't know a LOT about Garands but I recently read about the receiver. There is a S/N on the top of the receiver and there is also a drawing and revision number on the bottom/side. You can compare those two numbers with a big list of dates to see if the receiver is in tact or if it was once welded together. I found that my Garand receiver is a good one and seems to date mine around June of 1942.

Here are pics of it: First link is full album of Garand and parts pics (2 pages)

Oh yeah.. you have to spend a LOT of time with boiled linseed oil to do the stock right. I think I have about 20 hours of rubbing into mine but I love the results.

That seems a little on the high side, but average for your typical gun shop. CMP is the way to go. Are you looking for a collector, a shooter, a little bit of both? Most gun store finds I've seen are mix master shooters at best.
I do know of a guy who has over 20 of them mostly Springfields & H&R, a few Winchesters and a beautiful IHC. He may be 75 y/o but he is up on the values. I tried getting the IHC for cheap. Your best bet is a private sale or auction. If you find a nice one you may pay a good dollar for it. But chances are you'll never lose money on it.

There is no such beast as a numbers matching war time Garand. So find one you like and buy it. You'll love it.
Oh and don't forget to grease it and like already said don't use commercial ammo without and adjustable operating rod.
