    Default Shooting a dog

Any comments on the legality of drawing your weapon and shooting a dog that is about to attack you?

Does “Abide by the following statute” count as a comment?
    3 P.S. § 459-501

    Title 3 P.S. Agriculture
    Chapter 8. Dogs and Cats
    Dog Law
    Article V. Offenses of Dogs
§ 459-501. Killing dogs; dogs as nuisances

    (a) Legal to kill certain dogs.--Any person may kill any dog which he sees in the act of pursuing or wounding or killing any domestic animal, wounding or killing other dogs, cats or household pets, or pursuing, wounding or attacking human beings, whether or not such a dog bears the license tag required by the provisions of this act. There shall be no liability on such persons in damages or otherwise for such killing.
    (b) Private nuisance.--Any dog that enters any field or enclosure where domestic animals are confined, provided that the enclosure is adequate for the purpose intended, shall constitute a private nuisance, and the owner or tenant of such field, or their agent or servant, may detain such dog and turn it over to the local police authority or State dog warden or employee of the department. While so detained, the dog shall be treated in a humane manner.
    (c) Licensed dogs not included.--Licensed dogs, when accompanied by their owner or handler, shall not be included under the provisions of this section unless caught in the act of pursuing, wounding or killing any domestic animal, wounding or killing any dogs, cats or household pets, or pursuing, wounding or attacking human beings.
    (d) Repealed by 1990, May 31, P.L. 213, No. 46, effective in 60 days. [Only subsection (d) was repealed, not the entire statute.]

I carry a small can of pepper spray to handle dog attacks. My dogs and I have been attacked before, pepper spray has always worked. It will not cause any long term harm to the attacking dog.

Pepper spray tends to piss off certain dogs.

Use more! A dogs eyes are not affected, they dont have tear glands. Focus should be mouth and nose. Not that it is that far apart that it shouldnt have hit there initially. Just remember, dogs moving, if you went for eyes, you may have gone high, if this is ineffective there is always lead spray, fmj spray and many other effective sprays. Again I advocate only in life threatening situations, dogs like so many humans can be all talk/ bark!

I wouldn't bet you life on the pepper spray against certain dogs. I have seen a junk yard dog or two get even more aggressive when sprayed. I would consider the lethality of the breed before I decided to use pepper spray.
