Default What sucks: My GSG, my ammo, or .22lr in general? HELP!

Ok guys, I need some help here. Just got back from the range after shooting my new (to me) GSG, which is my first foray into .22 and, needless to say, I stand unimpressed. And pissed. The god damn thing might as well be a single shot. Realistically, between 1/3 and 1/2 of the shots failed. The vast majority were light strikes, although a numer failed to feed as well. It happened with all four magazines. I went through 200-300 rounds of Remington Golden Bullet 525 pack. I am so unfamiliar with the platform that I dont know where to start. Do they like to be wet or dry? There is an NCStar dot on the cover by way of "claw" directly on cover, could it be too tight? Bad ammo? Par for the .22lr course? Thanks!

    Probably a combo of events;

Rem GBs are OK for bolt and lever, but are generally disliked in semi's.

Also, the sheer act of feeding the rimmed .22 from a mag can be a super PITA. The angles, feed-ramp - if exists - the sharp-edge of the chamber mouth; all can conspire to make for unreliable feeding.

Same for the ammo cycling the action and how much of a copper-coat the round-nose has for allowing for a smooth feed, or, how hard the plain lead nose is for the same function.
I have an Erma RX22 PPKS clone that I love - but it will flat out be a useless paperweight with anything but CCI MiniMags. On CCI's it becomes a Ruger MkII. My WASR22 eats anything.

One of the dedicated GSG subforums, like over at AR15.com for example, probably has stickies on ammo, how to resolve FTF/FTE issues.
All of my guns are lubed with BACON GREASE.

IMO golden Bullshit are crap ammo.

Try some federal bulk or fed 510. When ever I take out a .22lr gun for the first time I usually have 5-6 different kinds of ammo on hand and I shoot till I find ones that the gun likes, then I use those to find which ones go straight out of it.

    Ok...

I may be the minority here....

But, the Golden bullets cycle better than Federal bulk packs, Wolf MT, CCI standards, and well.....quite a few others. GB are DEFINITELY hotter than Federal bulk pack in my guns.

If GB's won't cycle then go with high velocity bullets like the CCI Minimag and Velocitors. If it isn't high velocity , then it likely won't work.

I'm in the same minority neighborhood as you... The golden is well received by my SIG Mosquito, Ruger 10/22 and my old Savage. On the other hand, introducing the SIG or Savage to CCI or Wolf is like posting a pic of a nekkid dude in this thread. It sits there and looks at you with a WTF look on their faces. I guess the Ruger swings both ways.

Sometimes you wonder if it's "internet rumor", and I had always heard bad stuff about Remington Golden Bullets, but figured I'd try them for myself.

    I have a Mossberg Plinkster .22 semi-auto using 10 round mags.
When using the bulk-pack Rem ammo I picked up at W-mart I get between 1 and 3 failures to fire in every mag.

I do not have the same problem with the Federal 550 rd bulk-pack ammo.

Is that conclusive evidence? It is for me.

As for the GSG... I've seen plenty of them spewing itty-bitty hunks of lead downrange as fast as the operator could work the trigger. Would love to have one myself.

I have a few 22's. I have a Sig Mosquito that I only shoot CCI's from and that works great. I also have a M&P 15-22 that can shoot pretty much anything but I almost always use the federal or blazer bulk pack.

You mentioned that the gun was new. Dd you happen to lube it up at all before you shot it? I think if you cleaned it up some and put some oil on the feed and bolt area the problems may ease up. Also, make sure that you are not just jamming the ammo in the magazine. Take your time and make sure the ammo is properly seated in and that may hep as well.

Like any 22 semi you have to find out what kind of ammo it likes. Don't get pissed if it doesn't like one brand on your first trip out. My gsg loves the fed bulk pack from Wally world and also the 500 round lead nose federal champion bricks. Make sure you lube up the bolt and internals good cuz they will rub and slow down with use. Also don't hold the gun by the mag or magwell when shooting, use the handguard. Also take off the buttstock and be sure that the retaining screw on the inside on the back of the bolt is nice and tight.

For the best info go to ar15.com clcik on armory and goto the gsg section. It has they most helpful info there.

Thanks everybody!! So here, I believe, are my mistakes thusfar. Gun is used and I did not clean and lube before hand, I just spent 2 hours cleaning a god awful shitty mess out of it. Got everything with Eezox, couple drops of CLP on the good bits. Second, loose screws abound in the bolt and carrier area. Got them squared away, couldnt hurt. I am going to the range again tomorrow night, so I'll pick up a little bit of each kind of ammo at the store and see what sticks!!
