Default So I need a new bushing on my 1911??

I picked up my jammed 1911 from the gunsmith and he said I need a new bbl bushing. The one I have has some play in it. Any suggestions on a good place to snag a quality bbl bushing.

Well now, before you cram just any old bushing into a 1911, there might be a few things worth considering.

Is this a precision bullseye gun? Like maybe a National Match, or one particularly accurized for target shooting?

Or is this some kind of race gun , for shooting games?

Or is this a Self Defense carry item?

Or is this a WWI bring-back, rusted and with lots of "character"?

Or just a parts collection "shooter"?

Your answers here will help determine what might be advised. There are some barrels which have a flare on them and require a certain type of bushing - and they are different from a barrel which has no taper. Then, there are collet style bushings.

    IOW, more data is required.....

You might do well to contact certain members of our forum who have a bit of experience in the multitudinous variations on the 1911 theme, and Lycan't-possibly-think-of-any-thrope who that might be.

Always check Brownell's first. Here's the link just type 1911 barrel bushing into the product search.

    http://www.brownells.com/

Be sure to read the product descriptions and bear in mind that a custom bushing requires fitting a) to the slide and b) to the barrel and is best done by someone who knows what they are doing. And btw a little play of the barrel when the slide is locked in battery is not neccessarily bad when you consider that the barrel expands as it builds up heat from firing.

Any good gunsmith will order the part and fit it properly. I would suggest using a gunsmith that specializes in 1911's. Most people who call themselves gunsmiths are nothing more than hackers on 1911's

and don't forget the free 1911 catalog as well. IMHO, brownell's is a tad pricey, find what you want then check midway

if the gun is making groups less than 5" at 25 yards you are wasting money unless you use it for competition. i carry a 45 that is loose as a goose, and will not reliably print on a paper plate at 25 yards. then again, most people can't do that with a tight gun.

If possible I'd go to a local gun show. Bushings aren't all that expensive. Shipping prices from Midway would increase the cost too much for my liking. The gunsmith may have wanted to sell you a bushing to increase his profit. I'd take my own mesurements or have a friend do it. Unless I missed the fact that the gun was well used, I find it hard to believe the bushing would be that worn. You might have other problems. Keep us posted.

I have NEVER heard of a loose barrel bushing causing jams. A loose barrel bushing prevents jamming. That's why every military surplus 1911 rattles like a barn door when you shake it.

I can understand if your "gunsmith" said that a sloppy barrel bushing was giving poor accuracy. But it sounds to me like the guy is either out to lunch, or just plain full of shit.
