Default My new scope... (Range Report in posts #16 and 17)Apex Tactical 6-25x50 GMIR

I finally got my new scope thursday. I mounted the scope in Warne low quick detach rings.

I mounted the scope on my Reminton 700 Tactical and headed out to the range. (it was really f'ing cold) I should spend the money for a bore sight lazer, this scope took me about 8 shots just to get it on the paper. Once I got it on the paper the adjustments were predictable and repeatable.

I didn't have time to do a complete box test or determine how much adjustment was left after I zeroed. This will be done on a warmer day.

So far my experience with this product and company have been very positive. I had been emailing Brian at Apex atleast 3 times a week for about a month.

This scope has the Ghost-Mil Illuminated Reticle, I really like. I haven't had a chance to estimate range with it yet but will wait for warmer weather for that too.

Thank you for posting this short review up RecondLdr. I know lots of people that have been interested in this scope, but haven't known anybody that's held or used one. They look to be like a pretty large scope, which isn't a bad thing, but good to know. I'm glad to hear that you liked the reticle. I'm curious to how it performs in lower light, how reliably it dials, and if it subtends correctly. Keep us posted, there are quite a few people watching this one.

Edit: I tried to rep you, but I gotta spread some love.

f%ck it, I'll rep him for you guys.

let us know how it tracks, cost, little details, etc.

as for the laser bore site, you can zero it at 25 by removing the bolt, bracing the weapon, and adjusting to align reticle with target. fire one to confirm and then make the necessary scope adjustment for a 25yd to 100yd dope. It's a shitty field expedient method, but it works.

I wanted to do this (bolded part) but there was someone else on the 25yd line. I couldn't wait till he was done... I went down range and covered the entire target board with targets and shot. The first round I saw hit about 12" Low and 4" left of the target. (I was mucking around with the turrets the night before, guess I didn't turn them back all the way)

As you can see from the pics, the scope grouped well with M118LR. There was a fairly steady full value wind at about 5 mph from right to left. This is why I didn't adjust the wind anymore. I figured this would be very close to zero with out the wind.

I will post some through the scope pics and results from the box test when I do it. I am not sure when that will happen, I have a lot on my plate right now.

ETA: The MSRP of this scope is $549.99, on sale now at $429.99 but military and LEO get 20% discount. I paid $345 including shipping.

I got it from the company website...

    http://apextacticalllc.com/

It seems to work very well so far. I have not been able to really test it because work keeps getting in the way...but so far I am happy with the purchase.

You can bore sight at any range you wish. I try to do it at 50 - 100 yards(depends on how big of a target I can muster up) and position myself at least two feet behind the rifle to line things up. The farther behind the rifle you get, the smaller the bore looks and the easier it is to center the target w/in.

    UPDATE:

I took this scope out this weekend for some testing/teaching/practice. I couldn't get permission to shoot because the farmer was working in the field adjacent to the farm so I decided to practice range estimation and teach my son at the same time.

    Set up:
    1) I measured (19.25")and cut out the torso from some defensive pistol targets and attached them to equally sized plywood. I screwed the targets to 2x4s (pointed at the bottom).

    2) I took the targets down range, hammered them into the ground and marked each location as a waypoint in my Garmin GPS.

    3) I went back and found a suitable location to lay out my kit and stay out of the sun (it was hot as hell Saturday).

    The Test:
    1) Use the reticle and estimate the range to each of the 6 targets.

    The results:
    tgt 1 - measured 2.2 mil dots* so 19.5/36x1000/2.2 = 246.2 yds
    actual GPS distance 221 meters = 241yd

    tgt 2 - measured 2 mil dots* so 19.5/36x1000/2 = 270.8 yds
    actual GPS distance 244meters = 267 yds

    tgt 3 - measured 1.5 mil dots* so 19.5/36x1000 = 361 yds
actual GPS distance 334 meters = 365 yds

    tgt 4 - measured 1.1 mil dots* so 19.5/36x1000 = 492.4 yds
actual GPS distance 458 meters = 500 yds

    tgt 5 - measured 1.0 mil dots* so 19.5/36x1000 = 541.7 yds
actual GPS distance 500 meters = 546 yds

    tgt 6 - measured .75 mil dots" so 19.5/36x1000 = 722.2 yds
actual GPS distance 656 meters = 717 yds

    My estimated Range
    Actual Range
GPS accuracy (according to the display) <1m at the time of measurement.

It looks like I am a little rusty at this method of range estimation. I averaged +/- 6yds with a max of 7 yd error. Hopefully I will get to shoot these same targets before the crops grow and ruin my fields of fire.

I am planning on getting out this weekend to shoot and see how this scope tracks.

ETA: When my son found out there was math involved, he wanted no part of this. He was happy to sit on my field chair and watch/fetch me beer. I guess I expected too much out of a 12 year old...

I would say your ranging pretty good. less than a percent off at 700 yards.
