When it's your turn just tell the Deputy, security guard, screener that you need to check your firearm... BEFORE going through the metal detector.

just inform them you need to check a firearm, before you pass through the detectors. some places have an area to clear your weapon, some might not. i've yet to go to a courthouse that has one. in my experiences, i've either gotten a key to the locker, or a receipt to retrieve it later. sometimes, they might clear it for you while you're gone; i don't like that, personally.

most of the time, i've just left all my other stuff with the gun: my keys, my knife, camera, and cell phone. some places will ask to see your LTCF, or some other picture ID, just to "confirm your identity".

What everyone else said. Try not to use the word "gun" when alerting the deputy that you need to check your pistol. The word gun is one of those things that can cause some folks to have knee-jerk reactions. Just say something like, "I need to check my firearm."
