    Default Ruger SR-556 Sights

I recently bought an SR-556 rifle which I put 40 rounds through the other day. But something about the sights just wasn't working for me. When using the small aperture, I couldn't really tell if the front post was centered. I don't know if this is a contributing factor, but the concave side of the sight faces away from the shooters eye while on the M16A2 series, it faces towards the eye.

My vision is 20/20 as of August. I qualified expert on the Navy M16A3 qualification course as recently as July.

    and the front:

I have the same problem. My M&P15X has the standard "F" front sight, but the rear is the folding Troy like yours. The small aperture is good out to 50 yds, but at 100 yds it's really hard to center the front post.

I don't know if this is an option for you, but I recently put a red dot on mine & just zeroed it today. I shot four 5 shot groups before I got it centered at 50 yds & they were all under 1" (If I disregard a couple flyers). I didn't stay to zero it at 100 yds- I got too cold.

I'm still keeping the Troy rear sight on for backup.

I'm planning on getting an optical sight for it, but as the military still puts a premium on marksmanship with iron sights, I'd still like to do some shooting sans scope.

I know. A rear sight with a smaller aperture is probably the answer.
But dammit, it was a mere 40 years ago, when I was in the Marines, that I regularly qualified expert out to 500 yds using an old worn out M14 with an aperture probably the same size as this one. I'm getting old!

I don't think the aperture is too big because I can shoot fine with the larger aperture.

You might try "smoking" the sights. Wax candle or paper match.

It's an old trick that kills the tiny bit of flare that so screws up the sight picture if your eye has any astigmatism.

Thanks Flash. I'll give it a try.
