Stuck Bore Snake
This is embarrassing but here it goes. I fired a few rounds from my new Ruger SR-556 today. I passed a bore snake through it 4 times with no problem. After the 4th pass, a bit of thread from the inside came out so I tied a knot around the snake and snipped off the excess. On the 5th and final pass, the snake got stuck in the barrel. I mean really stuck.
The end of the bore snake is about an inch past the chamber. The rope and first 14" or so of the snake are out of the muzzle.
Help!

Re: Stuck Bore Snake
You don't have a cleaning rod to push it out with?

Re: Stuck Bore Snake
i just bought one for my ar but havent used it yet. i'll have to remember not to tye it off. im wondering if a push rod would work tho because of the way its woven it seems like it may bunch up when you hit it with the rod instead of pushing out.

Re: Stuck Bore Snake
I've got a rod, but i like going through the bore a few times with a dry bore snake before using the rod to push a solvent soaked pad or 2 down the bore. I tried pushing it out with the rod but the plastic jag started to bend. And I've pulled pretty hard on the string to no avail so i don't think i can push it through. I think I'm going to have to find a way to pull it back through the chamber.

Re: Stuck Bore Snake
maybe try bending a fishing hook straight but leave the barb on the end and tape it to a thin peice of plastic or a wooden dowel and try to stab the barb into the snake to get it caught in the snake and pull it out backwards? just make sure the hook is on tight so it doesnt come off and get lodged in the barrel also.

Re: Stuck Bore Snake
Maybe cut the bore snake off flush with the barrel and use an air compressor to blow it out backwards.

Re: Stuck Bore Snake
The boresnakes are even tight in the bore, how did this happen? As far as pushing it out, use a rod and your good to go.

Re: Stuck Bore Snake
Don't use a cleaning rod as it will flex and possibly damage bore.
Simply soften the knotted end while pulling it out thru the muzzle per below.
1. Oil lube bore from muzzle end providing a slippery surface.
2. Tie bore snake around solid object, or better yet have someone it pull on the end. Try to pull it out straight.
3. Heat required to soften stuck end. Cigar lighter , small propane torch, long grill lighter, etc. Apply heat....but don't blast it keeping the tip away from the cord so it softens...as being pulled. If it gets melted badly simply run a brush/snake thru to remove the plastic.
As material softens it will deform. Keep increasing pulling pressure on until out.
