Re: Where did you buy your Gun Safe in Southeast PA?
Are you looking for a Safe or a Container???
Safe = a minimum of a 1/4" plate body, a minimum of a 1/2" plate door, solid door frame 3/4" steel, 1/2" steel locking bolt frame, 1" thick steel lock backing plate, poured in fire liner, inner steel liner, tight tolerances, and super tight door to frame fit.
Container = Just about all GUN SAFES...RSCs - Residential Security Containers
= 12ga to 7ga press bent steel of varying quality, drywall/sheet rock fire material, large door gaps, formed/press bent door jams.
True safes are handcrafted, expensive, and heavy.
Containers are mass produced, thin, light, and relatively inexpensive.
If the budget is tight, then a normal gun safe / container is far better than nothing.
If your collection is growing in value and you can afford a real Safe....Check out a Graffunder.
We are a Graffunder dealer and Mike from Thompson Safes in Maryland is a Graffunder dealer.
I would suggest checking out our Graffunder web page.

Re: Where did you buy your Gun Safe in Southeast PA?
If the Graffunders are not in the budget and you are going with a regular gun safe.....look for a model with external hinges.....like a Summit, Superior, or Browning
Hinges are sometimes a topic of debate, but usually it is a manufacture’s attempt to legitimize their use of internal hinges. Internal hinges are not as strong as external hinges and therefore have the potential to fail.
Compounding matters, internal hinges are difficult to service; the
design in general is quite poor as it limits the opening range to 90 degrees. Once 90 degrees of opening is reached any extra opening force is transferred to the hinges, door, and doorjamb. Over time this force will distort both the hinges and the body. This limited opening range also restricts access to a portion of your safe.
Internal hinges also require clearance gaps in the fire insulation,
therefore compromising fire protection.
External hinges provide 180 degrees of opening and full
access to your valuables.
External hinges also afford the luxury of removing the door which may
be an asset should the door require service or it’s removal facilitates moving the safe.
One should note that external hinges pose ZERO threat to the security of the safe. Locking bolts secure the door from the inside on both the hinge side and opening side.
Hinges should never be part of the security measures of the safe. The hinge’s only duty should be to swing the door. If they are attacked, the burglar is misdirecting his or her efforts.
Next time you are at a bank, take a look at their multi-ton vault door…note what type of hinges are used. All Commercial safes use external hinges.
Why use an inferior design that limits access, stresses components, and impinges on fire protection?

Re: Where did you buy your Gun Safe in Southeast PA?
I also bought mine at Liberty Safes in Cherry Hill. They have a guy there that delivers. I am 100% happy with their price, service and selection. Plus they didn't charge me sales tax. When you do decide on a safe, if you can fill half of the one you are thinking about, get the next size larger!

Re: Where did you buy your Gun Safe in Southeast PA?
I bought mine at FCO about 2 years ago. I checked Dick's and Cabela's too. They all had some real nice safes for decent prices. What I learned was to find a good quality safe that is near your home, shipping and setting up can get expensive real quick. I did not go to Liberty Safe in NJ simply because I hate to spend any money in that state.
Your web muscles do not frighten me.

Re: Where did you buy your Gun Safe in Southeast PA?
There is a Fort Knox safe dealer in Downingtown PA. I met with him one day. Small showroom (that is REALLY hard to find) but he has a few to show you and orders what you want then.
Fort Knox is up there on price, but qualitly is pretty good.
I will keep my thoughts on Liberty safes to myself.

Re: Where did you buy your Gun Safe in Southeast PA?
Not impressed.....Their TOP models have an outter body thickness of 3/16" press bent......thats it....... nothing thicker.
For the price you can get a Graffunder or Brown.
Graffunders and Browns thinnest safes have a outter body thickness of 1/4" Plate. They offer 1/4" Plate Body, 1/2" Plate Body, and 1" Plate Bodies.....Then add the 1.5" of cement w/vermiculiet and inner steel liner. The doors are 1/2" Plate, 1" Plate, and 1.5" Plate respectively.Last edited by AdvancedArms; January 7th, 2010 at 03:03 AM.

Re: Where did you buy your Gun Safe in Southeast PA?
I bought my safe at cabelas, I drove up and picked up with a friend with my pick up truck. With the coupons and such it was the best price. And really it was not to bad to get off the truck and in place were I wanted it. It only took me and my friend who picked it up with me and my next door neighbor to get it in the house and in place. The safe is made by champion and is good quality.
