Re: Must a LTCF be carried on your person ?
What you "think" is of no relevance
A gun shop has no way to know if a gun is stolen when they receive it and no way to find out.
So if they sell it to you and it later gets discovered, you and the dealer will have a civil issue. I cant say who would win. The FFL reimbursed the few cases I have heard of and been party to personally.
Maybe GL has more info on who would likely be liable to suffer the loss if the issue went to court._________________________________________

Re: Must a LTCF be carried on your person ?
Yes, each buyer has recourse against his seller, and nobody else. It requires privity of contract, the guy who sold you the gun failed to provide what he promised, good title.
It can get involved, sometimes stolen goods are recovered years later, having passed through multiple hands. At some point, a person who resold it will find that his seller can't be found (thieves try to make sure you can't find them later), is judgment-proof, or the applicable statute of limitations has expired. But it's possible for H to sue G, then G sues F, who sues E, and so on, all the way to the thief A.Attorney Phil Kline, AKA gunlawyer001@gmail.com

Re: Must a LTCF be carried on your person ?
Absolutely, the gun is gone, and if it's verified that it was stolen, it goes back to the original owner. I usually think in terms of (1) staying out of jail, and then (2) keeping my stuff, if possible. I assume my clients feel the same.
I'd hope that there'd be more due process than the cop mailing it to the person who filed the theft claim, especially since they're basically encouraging straw purchasers to report every gun as stolen. But I suspect that they usually clear the file by just sending it back, and in the absence of any evidence that you knew it was stolen, they close the file.Attorney Phil Kline, AKA gunlawyer001@gmail.com

Good one, Rich.
...By the way, does anyone know the Standard Operating Procedure for most departments these days regarding officers allowing citizens to "lubricate" first?
