    Default 9mm Defensive ammo

Besides Gold Dot HPs, and Hornady TAP ammo, what are some of the other quality types of ammo for the 9mm Luger? I'd like to stick with 124gr or 147gr for carry ammo and keep the 115gr FMJs for the range.

If you can lay hands on Black Talons~they're pretty wicked. Did some wet newspaper test with some, still have them...I sorta understand the Winchester SX somethin' or other is a comparable round but you can find Talons if ya dig around a bit...someone will come along that will know.

I have Black Talons & some hot Cor-Bon & some Hydra-Shok stuff loaded in defensive mags for my Beretta but when I did inventory I found a couple boxes of Gold Dots I picked up somewhere..

Winchester Ranger and SXT as mentioned, also Remington Golden Saber, and my choice the Federal HST. There is also Double Tap and Buffalo Bore.

I carry 124 gr +P Federal EFMJ. They don't collect lint in a hole like HST.

Below are a couple of photo's of Federal HST that were shot into ballistic gel, thru a pair of denim jeans, at a group shoot a couple years ago in Pittsburgh. The bullet on the left is a 45 acp, don't recall the weight and if I remember correctly it expanded to .60 caliber. The bullet on the right was a 9mm 147 gr Federal HST I shot thru my Kahr CW9 into the gel, It expanded to .45 caliber and penetrated the gel 16 inches.

The guy that brought the gel to the shoot was a Corbon representative, he said the Federal HST was the only round he'd recommend that wasn't a Corbon product.

Now I know that bullet performance tests are a dime a dozen on the internet. But this is one that I really liked. He tested .45, .40, .38, 9mm, and .380 with many different rounds.

he tested .380 ACP, 9mm, .38 Special, .40 S&W, and .45 ACP. For the .380 tests he used both the Keltec P3AT or the Ruger LCP, for the 9mm he used the Glock model 19, .38 Specials were fired from Smith & Wesson J-framed revolvers, .40 S&W's were fired from Glock 27, 23, and 22 pistols, and the .45 ACP rounds were put through a 5 inch 1911.

Nate was able to get his hands on 23 different boxes of defensive ammunition for the various calibers mentioned. Getting this ammunition was a feat in and of itself since good hollowpoint ammo is very difficult to find. That being said, this test is what it is and it is over. If Nate could have gotten a larger selection of ammunition he would have; so if your favorite round is not included in this test it is only because Nate was unable to find any (and trust me, he scrounged and burned up favors to get the variety that he tested).

The Hornady Critical Defense load in 9mm looks very promising. We have a few boxes here at the compound and have shot it at the range and it functions excellently.
