Default i need help identifying a gun.

i have a friend who is selling some of her exhusbands guns that he left there.I want to give her a fair price but not over pay i know what all the other guns are and what they are worth.exept this one rifle.i do not have a pic of it yet,it is stamped in the side chatellerauli M le 1892 MD on the left side.on the right it is stamped MA C 1914.olso on the left it has J H stamped in and a J and L with circles around them.all the numbers match stock, recieve, and barrel.it is bolt action and looks like it has fittting for a bayonet.if anyone knows any thing about it like what caliper it is and what would be a fair price i would really appreciate it thank you.

Without seeing it it seems to be an 1890 cavalry carbine. It could be a 8x50R Lebel cartridge/round

also are you sure it doesn't say Châtellerault not chatellerauli. either way there is info out there on them...

Sorry I couldn't be more help

It may be a French MLE 1892 carbine. Click on the link, see if the picture looks like the one in question.

The ones I saw if they had clips that went with the rifle they were going for between $100.00 and $175.00

I concur, IIRC I had a friend buy one for $95 from a gunshop in York about 9 yrs. ago. A bit scary to shoot that round from that rifle, the surplus ammo we found would take a second to go off after you pulled the trigger. We had a bit of the stock behind the receiver chip off when we shot it, it is a wallhanger now, but looks good.

I don't really know much of anything about the guns really. But, it is French... so it probably didn't get much use - dropped once, never fired. lol

    chatellerauli M le 1892:

Chatellerauli: is the armory, about as central in France as you can get. Châtellerault is the family that the fortress was name for.

    M le 1892: More likely M de 1892, for model of 1892.

An evil rifle from the same folks that developed the Chauchat machine gun, with that same nasty open magazine.

Honestly, I'd pay about $50, and just hang it on the wall as an oddity.
