If you want to get technical you can explain that an "assault rifle" is classified as a " fully automatic weapon of rifle caliber", not a semi-auto anything.

Hate to burst your bubble, but the only true "assault rifle" is the STG44, in German "SturmGewehr" literally, "Storm Rifle" (often implied to mean "assault"). The rest are either "Battle Rifles" such as the Garand, M-14, FAL, G-3, or "Service Rifles" such as the AK, AR, Sig, FNC, G-36, et al. The term "assault rifle" as used by the MSM has been mis-used and has become a buzz-word that incites fear in the minds of the un-educated. Responsible firearms owner's continued use of that and other false terms only re-inforces the fear. You can only truly free someone from their fear through education.

Good, now that the history lesson is over...

There are a miriad of good answers to this question, ranging from questioning their need for vehicles that exceed 65mph, multiple pairs of shoes, or a two story house with four bedrooms and two and a half baths for a family of three, and getting into the Constitutional aspect or the technical aspect. I think the answer varies depending upon the seriousness of the person asking.

Also, since this is such a recurring question, perhaps this should be made a sticky in the rifle section? I dunno.
