Carrying in another state NJ on vactaion.
If I go to a state that I cant carry such as NJ, can I lock it in my trunk and keep it locked there? Can I possibly lock it in my drunk and then take it into the hotel and keep it there? What states allow this?
Question 2. If I go to a state like Florida and have to dive through no carry states, how do I get the weapon to a legally carry state when I have to pass through a place like NJ?

Re: Carrying in another state NJ on vactaion.
If your destination is a NO gun state, especially NJ - you may not just keep it locked in trunk.
If passing through those states you are legal and protected by the Federal Firearm Transport Law - but you have to lock it up and take the ammo out and separate them during your transition through those states.
This has been answered ad nauseum on this forum.

Re: Carrying in another state NJ on vactaion.
Sorry, I have a Jeep with no separate area from the passenger compartment so I wrote my response with that in my mind.
Note: In vehicles without a trunk separate from the passenger compartment any firearms AND ammunition must be in a locked container other than the glove compartment or console.FNX-9 Two-tone

Re: Carrying in another state NJ on vacation.
A good source is handgunlaw.us They have a pdf brochure for each state and do a good job of keeping it up to date.
In no-carry states, keep it locked up in the trunk, ammo separate. In some states (like Ohio) having a loaded magazine or speed loader anywhere in the vehicle "loads" the gun. We occasionally drive to New Hampshire and avoid anything but than gas or fast food stops in the People's Republics (NJ, NY and MA). Don't even pause in NY. I asked Mas Ayoob about magazine capacity and he suggested not taking mags with more than 10 rounds through NY.
Don't even think of driving through NYC, DC, or Chicago with a gun in the car unless you're willing to be the next "test case." They consider themselves way above federal law.

Re: Carrying in another state NJ on vactaion.
When I travel from Pa. to a state that we have reciprocity with, I usually make a copy of the reciprocity and keep it in the car.
Check out the site: http://www.attorneygeneral.gov/crime.aspx?id=184
It is the Pa. Attorney General site and it links to all states that we have reciprocity with at present.
Hope it helps.

Re: Carrying in another state NJ on vactaion.
I dealt with this last month. I drove from PA to Tenn. to a firearms training event and had numerous firearms and loads of ammo in the vehicle. The only state I had to worry about was Maryland - all 11 miles of it. I had everything unloaded and locked up except for my carry weapon. So, in each direction I stopped just before the MD border, unloaded and locked up the carry pistol, drove 11 miles through MD and then did the reverse and I was on my way again.

Good replies all/
Direct answer to your question concerning NJ: No, you cannot keep a firearm locked in your trunk while visiting. Therefore, you cannot keep it the hotel room either since you have no means of legally getting it there.
NJ is one place you do not want to take any chances whatsoever regarding handguns.
