Just got 1400 green tarnished 55 gr .224 caliber bullets
I stopped by Curt's, my local gun shop, to see what they had in stock for 55gr 223 bullets. They usually sell them for $9.95/100, but have been out for quite some time. Today they had some that were tarnished green... but not it was not like the normal copper oxide found on copper pipes, for example. Not all of them, but about 20 to 30% of the bullets in each bag were tarnished. It was a very brilliant turquoise color that very easily scraped off with a fingernail. He was selling it for $7.95/100 as is. He wasn't sure why they were discolored. They were in his storage area and were not exposed to water - he said the carboard box they were in was in good condition. He did say he forgot about them and they had been there for awhile. I decided to give them a try (bought all that he had in stock) after scraping a little of the green stuff off and saw the copper underneath looked good. Does anyone know what that green stuff is? Like I said, it looks very different from copper oxide and it is not crystalline either. It is like a fine, almost greasy coating. I'm just wondering if it could be some kind cleaning agent, maybe. Here's some pics:
Sorry, the pics are blurry. I'll update once I get them tumbled. I'm hoping that does the trick, otherwise, I'm gonna have to scrub them by hand or get rid of 'em.Last edited by max384; December 16th, 2009 at 07:13 PM.

Well, the bullets spent about an hour in the tumbler and were good as new... actually shinier than new!

I am glad you posted this. I picked up a bunch of .45 a few years ago. They are also tarnished a bit. Now I know how to take care of them.
